Book Description

An undiscovered trove of underwater photographs from the Golden Age of Florida roadside attractions "This account of the state's iconic pre-Disney attraction will appeal to those who visited Silver Springs and to those who have a strong interest in Florida pop culture."--Jim Miller, photographer and archaeologist "Lightheartedly fun, this book is a quick, pleasant read that invites nostalgia for a perceived innocence of an earlier time in Florida."--Leslie Hammond, chief curator, Appleton Museum of Art During the heyday of Florida theme parks, Bruce Mozert created some of the most memorable kitsch photography of the era. His underwater shots of beautiful models in crystal-clear waters were sent out on wire services and helped establish Silver Springs as Florida's premier tourist attraction. In the 1950s, his work helped lure the postwar generation to a land of fantastic, tropical, and mass-produced amusement. Silver Springs's popularity never depended upon parrots, monkeys, alligators, airboats, water-ski shows, or models dressed as mermaids. Instead, its appeal was primarily beneath the surface of the water, with cruises on glass bottom boats the major attraction. Mozert was Silver Springs's official photographer for nearly forty-five years, and his images were designed to sell the park. No one came up with ideas as zany or as memorable as he. A model cooks at a stove, wooden spoon at her mouth to taste, while condensed milk rises from a hidden can (to look like smoke); another bathes in a tub, scrubbing her toes; yet another relaxes on a chaise lounge while a nearby air conditioner hums away.

This is not your typical underwater photography coffee table book!! It is a quirky collection of carefully-posed photographs taken for crowd-pleasing effect, made for publicity pictures and postcards at Silver Springs. The effects are variously surreal, amusing, risque and kitsch. The photographer Bruce Mozert spent an entire career thinking of wacky scenes to shoot, and some of the ideas are brilliant. It's also a testament to the photographer's professionalism and achievement in making the best of the practical constraints (shallow fresh water, breath-holding models, buoyancy). The photographer and the models obviously had a lot of fun doing it. It's great fun to read. There are no stunning world-class masterpieces of technique or artistry here, but there's a style that grows on you. And to my surprise, there are a couple of hidden gems about underwater photography technique. Most of all - you're supposed to enjoy it.

Wonderful book. It's mainly a picture book, but has a nice history of the Silver Springs park.

still keep it as a coffee table book. Did come as an old library book; had multiple stickers and markings on it.

Ok

Excellent book detailing the both the history of Silver Springs and Bruce mozert who was the chief photograpner for over 40 year

Quality photographs and history of the uniquely awesome Silver Springs Florida in its heyday. Great memories for everyone who visited the Springs.

BrainWeb begins with the character Nick Hall trying to save the top actors at the Academy Awards from being executed one by one on TV by Islamic Jihadists. He does this by using his special ESP ability to guide a SpecOps assault at the risk of exposing his identity to those trying to capture him to use his ability for their own evil agendas. In particular, Nick and his love Megan are kidnapped by a psychopathic politician who wants Nick to learn secrets about his political rivals. Meanwhile, for other nefarious purposes, a powerful arms trafficker captures Nick's close friend Alex who is the sole source of microcomputer brain implants that can access the internet. Then Nick's confidant, black ops leader General Girdler, who's trying to help Nick, Megan and Alex, is blamed for their abductions. A flurry of action follows, with Nick leading the way. But I won't spoil the book for you by telling you more, except to say that the many adventures in BrainWeb are brilliantly created by the author.I've given 5 stars to all the N.Y. Times best-seller techno-thrillers written by Douglass E. Richards. One might call his novels "extended-science" fiction. They involve credible, yet undemonstrated as of 2015, phenomenology in fields including neurobiology, DNA research, microcomputer brain implants, psychopathy, and ESP. But none of this is at all tedious nor requires any knowledge of the field. This almost-believable technology is then embedded in gripping tales with deep backstories. Further, Richard's books are flawlessly written, composed with outstanding word pictures, and, except for one early sequel, are all fully stand-alone reads.

How many other authors will take the time to send you a Facebook message telling you about their new book? While Richards has many fans, I've appreciated the fact that he takes the time to stay connected with his readers and he loves getting feedback. As to the book itself, Richards delivers everything I expected: thrilling twists, loads of action, and deep philosophical thought on technologies and issues that aren't too far away. As with his other books, I read BRAIN WEB in a single sitting. Richards captures your attention and holds it--only letting you go at the conclusion, which is quite satisfying. He's set the stage for a third book, though BRAIN WEB stands on its own. I would highly recommend MIND'S EYE (the "sequel"), but you will enjoy this book even if you haven't read it.Get it now!

Nick Hall is back and taking the story to a new highlight. For me, Douglas Richards is evolving into a more advanced author. The start of the BrainWeb is quite horrific but too realistic to ignore. Combing action and technology was always a strong point of Douglas but this time the main characters are deepening as well. Clearly it is a work of fiction but based on quite real inventions and facts. It provides an interesting view on a potential future and related privacy concerns. But above a great adventure, I highly recommend it. And don't worry if this is the first book you read of Richards, it works fine without the previous books. However, don't be surprised If you get hooked on all the books :-)

As usual, Mr. Richards hits the mark again. I'll admit that during the first 1/3 of this book, I was a bit apprehensive. Had Mr. Richards taken a turn to the dark side? The diabolic scenarios he depicted had me wondering. I slogged onward, hoping to not be infected with the dreary future he outlined. I soon learned that this was just the roller coaster climbing slowly up the first ascent. When it finally reached the pinnacle, it was all about hanging onto your seat and enjoying the ride. The twists and turns and rapidly changing paradigms will leave you breathless. At the end, he neatly ties up all the loose ends, and doesn't leave us hanging. He also was honest enough with us to include at the end a section on which topics in the book were based on facts, and which were pure fiction.

This is an excellent second installment in the Nick Hall series. The only problem with this series is its improbable assumptions concerning telepathy. Once you set these absurdities aside, these are excellent stories with powerfully driven characters, a strong plot, and many twists and turns to delight the reader and keep him or her guessing. One of this author's strong points is his ability to create realistic villains. In my opinion, it is more difficult for a writer to come up with true to life villains as opposed to heroes. After all, we are all heroes in our own minds, are we not? But it takes real imagination to create a realistic villain. Mr. Richards does this effortlessly and repeatedly. This villains are some of his best characters. Further, he manages to put most of his characters somewhere in the middle as neither Saints nor Devils. I did not think that this second installment in this series would be better than the first, but I think that it probably is. Check it out and judge for yourself. RJB.

Design It!: From Programmer to Software Architect (The Pragmatic Programmers)

Review

"This book is timely, valuable, accessible, and excellent.  It is a clear, informed, and practical guide to the principles and practice of software architecture, for the aspiring architect as well as the established practitioner who wants to deepen and refresh their skills.  Michael Keeling takes the reader on a clear and results-oriented journey, from the fundamentals of the field to the state of the art."--Eoin Woods, CTO of Endava, editor of IEEE Software's Pragmatic Architect column, and author of Software Systems Architecture"What sets Design It! apart for me is its fresh perspective---that the technical undertaking of building software is an intensely social activity. Michael manages to uniquely fuse the mechanics of software architecture together with the chemistry of design thinking. You'll learn to move from architecture viewpoints into design mindsets and from managing architecture lifecycles into telling architecture stories. This is a must-have reference book on modern software architecting."-- Amine Chigani, Chief architect at GE Digital"Design It! is full of pragmatism, personal experience, and useful tips. This book has something to offer to anyone involved in software development, and it's fun to read."-- Eltjo Poort, CGI and recipient of the Linda Northrop Software Architecture Award"This book runs the complexity of software architecture through the real world of software development and distills it into real, understandable concepts that can be applied to everyday software engineering practices. In Design It!, Michael gives you his recipes for applying these concepts, providing pragmatic guidance to be successful in a very tough discipline."-- Will Chaparro, Software Development Manager at IBM"What I like most about Michael's style is that is inclusive: everyone on the team should become a better architect. His book gives us hands-on ways to achieve this by collecting many great ideas and tools that arose from the community. This book is for everyone who wants to build better software together."-- Thijmen de Gooijer, IT Architect at Kommuninvest Sweden

Explore more techniques to handle architecture design effectively. Learn the best ways and good qualities to become a software architect.

This book is designed to help kickstart your architectural thinking and set you up with practical methods to start making analytical decisions about the design of your systems. From how to think about quality attributes, how to approach architecture as a risk reducing disciplines and the catalogue of architecture styles; this book is also a great summary of the most important concepts on software architecture and serves also as a good referential source.I recommend this book to any engineer looking to make the jump to technical leader but it is also a great catalyst for practicing software architects looking to solidify some of their thinking and methods.

There is a lot of good information in this book. It helps the reader to start thinking in terms of software architecture as opposed to just programming or even software design. It also includes tips and advice from software architects. I found these very helpful and insightful. The case study, on the other hand, I found less than compelling. It seemed to be a bit too contrived and wrapped up too nicely without details, as if I missed a few critical sections. Overall, I found it a good, solid introduction to software architecture with direct methods for incorporating into future projects.

The border between design and architecture has always been a porous and ill-defined one. Most programmers will tell you they design the software they produce, and they're not exactly wrong. But most of us who code are focused on Getting It To Work, and work inside a defined environment or architecture. This book does an excellent job of broadening the coder perspective to a design and then an architectural perspective. Keeling has included all of the standard techniques, but puts them into a context of discussion and agreement. If you're a coder or a programmer or even if you have the Software Engineer title this book is an excellent and practical way to start thinking more broadly and designing at the system level rather than the my-function-and-area level. You may even find you're already doing design based on your experience and intuition - and this book is a good way to organize those intuitions and skills into real knowledge.

"Tell me about your architecture and I may not understand you. Show me your architecture, and I can explore it at my own pace, using my preferred cognitive style.” - Michael Keeling.Delighted to have had the opportunity to read this book. Software Architecture is not an easygoing-lightweight topic. It takes experience to know its depth, the abstraction level required and actually embrace it. In his book, Michael Keeling shows us how a very technical and structured context can be wonderfully presented.Throughout the book we have a step-by-step guidance to improve our skills as architects, with rich and actual examples, but also with the option to learn even more (using all the sound references used). The third part of the book provides a Toolbox filled with activities that can be used to enhance a team to grow their architecture skills.

Michael Keeling does a great job describing the architecture behind building software products and describing how one uses design at the background to architect products. Well written and has clear definitions of software terminologies.

Unbelievable! This is the best today-relevant book on software architecture that I have seen. I only disagree in that this book is for the software architect. It is going to require some mentoring for an aspiring software architect. I highly recommend it for anyone who even has a passing interest in software architecture because it also is a great reference for what software architects do and where they fit in. Buy it!

I selected this book because I'm a software developer/engineer, but the positions I've held so far in my career have been light on design work, concentrating mainly on development. I'm not really content to remain limited by my experience though, and this book is the perfect jumping off point to get me more in tune with the design work usually done by others.
