This series started out so well but has clearly gone downhill with each volume. Loved the first two. I didn't like volume 3 but decided to give it one more shot. No more.Vol 4 doesn't connect to the previous volume very well. Somewhat disjointed, and seems like just a watered-down story.

An incredibly large disappointment.First, let me explain that the disappointment isn’t really with the story as a standalone issue. The story in the volume is basic, not up to the other ones, but we all sometimes don’t get a home run.My problems are the changes since Volume 3 and how it hurts not only this story, but the universe.1. The art… I realize that they have a new artist with all the circumstances around the original artist. However, the art style itself is not something I like, too busy, too rough, and in my opinion not able to portray the story as well. I completely realize that art is subjective, so that means it wouldn’t stop me from enjoying it. Just not my favorite. The rest is slightly spoilery, not of the story but of everything else.Edit Note: The author is now posting that Volume 3 and 4 are connected, however until I see that the review below still stands.2. The soft reboot of the universe. What this means is they totally gloss over volume 3. Hannah going bad… didn’t happen. Hannah’s father being dead, didn’t happen. Violet shaving off her beard (or not even acknowledging having had it. Hannah hating the Queens, didn’t happen.I normally don’t tell too many spoilers, unfortunately I wish someone had told me this before I bought the book. Not that I wouldn’t have bought the book, rather at least I would be prepared. Fortunately my husband read it before me so I had some warning, but not enough. My problem is the erasure of all the investment that readers had put into the story. I realize the author might have written himself into a corner, or perhaps he wanted to veer back, but to basically erase the third volume (and elements of the first two) is frustrating. In addition the story wasn’t as good this time, so it wasn’t even that it was soft rebooted for a better story. That being said, the author has gotten so much good will from me that I will buy the next one and see how I feel. Either way though, I can’t give this comic more than 2 stars.

Kurtis Wiebe's wonderful fantasy/comedy mashup bounces back after the rocky third volume. The events of Rat Queens issue 16 are no longer canon and the depressing ending of the previous volume (that saw Hannah leave the group, embrace her demonic side, and also saw her father being executed) have all seemingly been undone with a soft reboot. While Wiebe promises that the previous volume's events are still canon, how they fit in to the story now will be revealed slowly from now on with the focus for this volume getting the series back to its fun and funny roots. With Hannah back in the fold and the group expanded to give more time in the spotlight to scene-stealing orc Braga, the group ventures out to quest once more back in their home of Palisades. The artwork is stronger this time thanks to new creative team member Owen Gieni (hopefully there will be no more behind the scenes drama). All in all this is a rather simple volume that, again, is all about getting back to the basics that made this series such a smash hit: adventuring, humor, and banter between characters. We get to see more of Palisades in the wake of the Cthulhu-demon attacks and there is a new role for Violet's brother as he starts his own rival band of mercenaries. The final arc of the book was laugh out loud funny in my opinion (the Queens discovering a magical treasure trove features numerous great scenes). All in all, a welcome return to form for this series.

A wonderful return to form for Rat Queens, that raises an insane amount of questions in the process. Volume 3 ended with estrangement and cliffhangers, but in Volume 4 everything is resolved with little explanation. I know the point of the new, post-hiatus story was to try to return the series to what it was at the beginning, but as someone who actually liked the more complicated and serious stories that Volume 3 got into, it feels like a major piece of the puzzle is missing. Especially considering it all officially shares a continuity. On that subject, I realized most of the way through this graphic novel that neither Volume 3 nor Volume 4 contain issue #16 of the original series. I purchased the comic digitally to discover that it's not actually canon. Granted, it was halted in the middle of telling a new story by an unforeseen hiatus, but it's just odd to see an alternate universe that may have started to answer some of the questions that weren't answered in the new series. Furthermore, issue #16 was the one that had the Vox Machina cameo, hearing of which was what had caused me to finally pick up the series in the first place. Just, weirdness all around. With that said, Rat Queens, Vol. 4: High Fantasies is an amazingly entertaining read. It's hilarious; it's vulgar; it's full of adventure. I love seeing the original team back together and bantering; I like the various little arcs this new volume tells. The dungeon crawl at the end is just brilliant writing from beginning to end, and I found myself stifling laughter multiple times while the rest of my house was asleep. Kurtis Wiebe wanted a return to form, and he succeeded. This stuff's great. However, I did get a slight Thor: Ragnarok vibe (not in a good way), in how heavy the humor was in contrast it its immediate story predecessor. I always loved the serious elements of the Rat Queens world and the various characters, and it almost felt like serious issues of the past were being treated simply as jokes. The most prominent example of this, I would say, is the role of Violet's brother in the story. However, without spoiling too much, I'll say that by the end this felt redeemed.Overall, yeah. The Rat Queens are back. There was a bit of a time skip and the details are confusing, but the story we get here is amazing and definitely worth the read. If you're new to Rat Queens, be warned: This is a comic for adults. Do not read if you're offended by strong language, graphic violence, adult humor, and sexuality. If that doesn't bother you and you love humor-based, character-focused stories inspired by adventuring parties in fantasy RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons, you should definitely check it out.P.S. So, Hannah has clearly cast Modify Memory on the entire party, right? Right!? Kurtis Wiebe please give us answers!

I'm rounding up a little.I was excited to hear about this story collection shortly before it came out, and it didn't disappoint. The author starts with the general idea of life within a simulation and explores it in many imaginative directions. Only the longer stories do much with character, but the crisp writing and ingenious variations on the theme are amply rewarding -- and sometimes quite surprising. There may have been one story too many and/or a couple of stories that overlap a bit more than is ideal, but I'm delighted to have bought and read this book.

If you enjoy Black Mirror at all you will be into this. Intelligent, and so dark at parts it was hard to continue but in the best of ways, The ways that technology and VR are portrayed are believable and shocking at the same time. The Author does a good job of pulling you into each story, getting you attached and interested in the characters as the digital boogeyman looms in the shadows. This may have been an impulse buy but I couldn't be happier.

This book reminded me a lot of the short stories of the old Omni magazine. Well written and provocative shorts, sometimes a little dark, sometimes a little funny, but always thought provoking. Definitely stretches your imagination and entertains your sense of wonder, albeit somewhat darkly. In a strong sense, it serves as a dire warning about the perils of VR and AI, and the strong potential for abuse at the expense of all humanity... like some new digital version of Crack that we stupid lazy humans are destined/doomed to succumb to.But it says more than that as well, I think, showing a variety of ways we can/will respond to being made aware after the fact... what happens after you wake up? And without coming right out and asking, it begs the question to each of us at the end of each story... are you a red pill or blue pill kind of person?

I didn’t have high expectations for this, but I was pleasantly surprised! The stories were page-turners and were often poignantly plausible. Granted, the quality of writing isn’t the best, but the story-telling is great.

Most stories were good, and those that were good, were way out there with a shocker at the end. The author takes virtual reality to some insane ends.A joy to read!

The writing is excellent, but the premise is what truly shines. The stories all revolve around simulations in the future. The story about the man in the virtual prison gave me chills, and the one about the "honeymoon" did the same. Overall a great read.

Restricted Fantasies is an anthology of eleven science fiction stories that take virtual reality to a whole new dimension. I did not want to put this book down and yet each story is satisfying so that it’s the perfect book for reading a story during your lunch hour or work break. I found the stories to be a fun read and I could see the possibilities of this fiction becoming reality. What person who has ever played the simple games on their phone who didn’t say “just one more level” or “just five more minutes”? And it’s never one more level. Those five minutes easily turn into two hours. How long would you stay in the game when it’s as real as real can get and the world is exactly all you dream it to be? These stories also show the pitfalls. Be careful what you ask for. You just may get it.Kevin Dneupper, the author, also did a fine job creating these worlds. Not all of them are dreams. This book stays on my “read again” list.

Review first posted at Girl Who Reads. A free copy was provided in exchange for an honest review. This collection of short stories explores the blurred lines between identity and reality when the virtual world is concerned. There is a futuristic child protective services worker having to dive into an unpleasant simulation where a man is raising his two children in a Neo-Nazi realm against custody agreements. Rumspringa is now in a virtual world for the Amish. The cheat code for the universe is used with disastrous consequences. There are those who are willing to push themselves with drugs in order to earn a few minutes of virtual gaming time. Communicating with alien cultures is an information diver's dream, but doesn't go according to plan. A virtual prison can't be escaped, especially if the warden is a computer program without humanity. It's always been a fascinating question to explore what makes us human and what makes up reality. There are a lot of concepts from "The Matrix" movies built into the background of these stories, such as being "plugged in" or needing a computer AI to run various instances of a simulation separately while people are in the virtual world. Other concepts might not be as familiar to some readers, like a universal basic income with jobs being extra on top of that, or that continual surveillance might be a reality. Those are in the background of these stories and not really discussed or developed at length. The focus is instead on human nature, or lack thereof, and how it intersects with technology. It might mean that corporations are in control of data streams and determine the culture of the people subscribing to that data stream. It might mean that there is no longer any physical contact with people and it's all virtual interaction with avatars. It might mean that families and relationships aren't as important as chasing the next high. The stories here are great at envisioning their futures even with a low word count. They'll make you think about how connected or plugged in you are, and how much actual human contact you have. This is probably the point, and it would make for a great conversation piece or book club reading.

#14,393 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

A truly superb work of true life spy craft. Other reviewers have more than adequately outlined the content of this work. I will just comment on my continued amazement at how during the Cold War so many liberals in the West were Soviet apologists blaming the West for all the world's problems. In the UK particularly, so many in the Labour Party took money from Moscow while undermining democratic institutions. The Soviet Union was a hell hole from beginning to end. How anyone could support it in any way is inexplicable.

I thought I had read all the important main books on the Cold War, but Ben Macintyre comes through and gives us a true life narrative of one of the West's greatest heroes - Oleg Gordievsky. A man who helped, particularly the UK, inform the goings on of the KGB and all the Boris and Natasha's and helped hasten the end of that nasty politik. This would be best read in the autumn on a train in the UK. Knowing that something good came out of all this, after all. Ben Macintyre probably will be sitting behind you. He has your back covered.

The Spy and The Traitor is touted in its subhead as "the greatest espionage story ever told." That isn't just publisher hype. The real events and the story of Oleg Gordievsky, KGB officer and diplomat reads like something from a John LeCarre or Robert Ludlum story...except it's true and marvelously documented. Raised by a father and older brother who both served devotedly and unquestioningly in the KGB (dad worked through Stalin's purges and survived in the KGB's precursor agency). Loyalty to the service then would seem to be a given--betraying the agency and its million members (you read that right) would be like sabotaging the family's business. Yet events and history continue to flummox human expectations.First the invasion of Hungary, then the erection of the Berlin Wall (which Gordievsky was present to see) and finally the brutal crushing of the Prague Spring in Czechoslovakia all drove this KGB officer further and further away from the party. Exposure to the West in Copenhagen and later in London provided a first hand taste of liberty and freedom. It served as the final push into the eager and eternally grateful arms of his M16 handlers. The double agent provided them with not merely a trove of concrete information but invaluable insight into the workings of the KGB and planning of the Soviet Leadership. It is no exaggeration to say Gordievsky was our Kim Philby. The details of these meetings, contacts, "drops", etc. and how spies operated from the end WWII until the dissolution of the Soviet empire is fascinating and novelistic in the telling. Gordievsky's escape or "exfiltration" from the USSR by M16 is nothing short of breathtaking--a Bourne Identity moment.Best of all though is the historical and moral context that gives readers a perspective of events' meanings. Ben McIntyre is a masterful storyteller and detailed chronicler. He thoroughly but concisely points out the import and value of Grodievsky's insights--particularly warning the Brits and thereby the Americans that the Soviet leader Yuri Andropov genuinely believed the West was intent upon a first nuclear strike. Appreciating that paranoia can be as perilous as animus, first Thatcher and then Reagan worked to assuage Soviet fears. It was Gordievsky who prepped both sides for successful summits in the 80s and it was he who counseled wisely to neither disband nor include the USSR in the SDI or Star Wars initiative. Rather, ratchet up the pressure and they would go bankrupt trying to keep up, which is precisely what happened.Gordievsky certainly didn't single handedly end the cold war--there were dozens of events and officials who played a significant role. But Oleg Gordievsky was surely in the first rank of those who made a valuable contribution earning the appreciation of Reagan, Thatcher, the CIA, M16 and yes, QEII (the monarch, not the ocean liner). Best of all, McIntryre doesn't put a patriotic gloss on his subject's behavior. What Gordievsky did was of enormous benefit to democracy and the West but it destroyed his marriage, implicated his wife and children as well as family and friends who all paid some price for his defection. In short, his actions both saved and ruined lives and the choices he made can be rightfully regarded as both morally defensible and appalling or enraging to those who knew him. Unsurprisingly, his marriage failed and most Russian friends regard him with disdain and disgust. In the western intelligence community he is a hero. This is terrific, important history and a wonderfully well-told tale. Enjoy!

It is not for nothing that John Le Carre noted in a front cover blurb “the best true spy story I have ever read.” Ben Macintyre’s biography of KGB Colonel and MI6 spy Oleg Gordievsky reads like a novel. His description of Gordievsky’s exfiltration from Moscow by MI6 under the watchful eyes of the KGB has all the hallmarks of a tension-packed Hollywood spy drama and that alone is worth the price of the book. The story begins with Gordievsky growing up as the son of a KGB general who becomes disillusioned with life under Soviet communism. He follows in his father’s footsteps and is recruited by the KGB. He is initially stationed in Denmark and there he is willingly recruited by MI6. As he rises in the KGB bureaucracy he become ever more important to the British. Along the way he marries, divorces remarries and has two daughters.Where Gordievsky enters history is when he becomes a senior political officer in the KGB’s London rezindentura in the early 1980s. While there he reports to his MI6 handlers that the Soviets actually believed that the United States was going to launch a first strike on the Soviet Union. So paranoid is KGB head and future general secretary Yuri Andropov that he sets up Operation RYaN to find evidence of plans for a first strike. As in most bureaucracies the KGB spies produce such evidence thereby exacerbating his paranoia. The same thing happened with the CIA when it was ordered to look for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq twenty years later.Compounding the problem was that at about the same time in 1983 NATO ordered up its massive Able Archer exercise which was a practice drill to deter a Soviet invasion of Western Europe. To the Russians it looked like a precursor to war. It was Gordievsky who tells the British of the Russian fears who then relay that information to the CIA. Several authors have noted that had not both sides deescalated, nuclear war was on the table. Gordievsky’s information to bothThatcher and Reagan was influential in bringing about from the de-escalation.As the Soviet heir apparent, Gorbachev met with Margaret Thatcher in London in 1984. Here Gordievsky’s role is crucial because be briefed both Thatcher and Gorbachev as MI6 spy and KGB political officer on negotiating strategy. The meeting was a big success and Thatcher noted that Gorbachev was a man she could do business with. The end of the Cold War was now more than a pipe dream. Later, after his exfiltration, Gordievsky meets with Reagan to advise him on negotiating strategy for an upcoming meeting with Gorbachev. But wait, what caused Gordievsky to be exfiltrated from Moscow, especially after he was made the Rezident of the KGB’s London office? In very short form the CIA is jealous of MI6 and wants to know who their source is. They soon find out and his name ends up on the desk of Aldrich Ames who was selling secrets to KGB officers in Washington. His betrayal leads to the death of scores of CIA operatives and sources in Russia and ultimately to the KGB investigation of Gordievsky. In Macintyre’s view Ames is a traitor who sold out his country for big bucks and Gordievsky is an honorable spy seeking to better his country. This is a great book that I couldn’t put down and I highly recommend it. As an added plus you learn quite a bit of tradecraft.

It is rare that any book keeps my interest through the entire story, but this is one of them. Because the story is true, it is better than even the best spy novel with made up characters and plot contrivances. Here everything was real and in many instances Oleg's life depended on decisions made by his handlers. The real-life spy dramas are one of my favorite genres. By the end of the book, I really felt sorry for Oleg's wife and daughters, who through no fault of their own, ended up in a nightmare when Oleg left them behind in Russia only to be retrieved 6 years later with disastrous results.I'll be reading A Spy Among Friends next, which I hear is even better.
