Instead it is a masterful overview of how many disciplines inside academia, and professions outside academia, think about Risk nowadays. Of books I have read (on any subject), it is one of the most successful at combining abstract high-level concepts with a set of substantial real-world examples. In style it is somewhat like a well-written concise textbook rather than a "popular science" book, so it requires some concentration rather than being easy bedtime reading. In the examples it presents data but does not seek to engage any details of statistical analysis.Regarding content, I cannot do better than compress the author's own summary: thinking about risk in the context of decisions where risk matters; creating measures of risk; understanding probabilities of risks by combining historical records, science and expert judgement; how individuals move from understanding risks to making choices; risk perception and judgmental biases; risk communication; cultural aspects of risk.Rather than plugging one author's view, the book emphasizes the many different aspects of risk and the complexity of real-world decision making. It strikes me as ideal for the reader who already has some familiarity with some aspect of the study of risk, but who is puzzled why other people view risk differently. Because many ideas are touched upon in a single paragraph (or sentence or phrase) it might be a bit overwhelming for a complete novice, but this is a book one could reread every few years and find something newly insightful.

If you're not familiar with the parameters of risk, Professor Fischhoff and Mr. Kadvany provide a thorough and accessible explanation of the topic. If I tried to summarize the book, I'd say that first you have to determine what you value (what's bad and what's not); next, you must have a way to measure events (how many bad outcomes and good outcomes can one identify); and lastly, you must have some analytical framework to review the events (try to identify the causes of the outcomes and separate causation from correlation or randomness). Principally, one's focus will be on bad outcomes. Statistics are a common tool in this area.The authors look at a wide range of events - various illnesses, premature births, nuclear energy, and many others. These offer concrete examples for the processes for measuring and analyzing risk. The values issue is essential to determine what one measures and the scope of the analysis. As the authors move through the books, the complexity of risk becomes more apparent.Risk perception arises from the values that society or individuals hold. A risk may not be perceived because there is no general agreement on whether a loss occurs from the event. Since values can and do change, the general agreement on whether there is a loss may also change. The book will address circumstances where this has occurred.I had one very small observation about one study during WWII of the German bombing of London. The study purported to show that the German bombs were falling randomly on London and therefore there was no real way to decide how to seek shelter. I do not challenge the finding of the study that the German bombs were falling randomly on London, but I do strongly believe that the bombs were falling on London, and not, say, on Edinburgh. Thus, the fact that the bombs were falling on London was not random. If one wished to avoid the bombs, get out of London. If this minor observation did nothing else, it convinced me that the authors were forcing me to think about risk.I think the authors will cause you to think about risk as well. If the topic interests you, you would do well to read the book.

Oxford doesn't publish books for "dummies" -- they publish "very short introductions". And this one isn't for dummies. It's an informed overview of the elements of understanding risks and making decisions with respect to them.For most of us, risk is something we address in an informal, rule-of-thumb manner. I think this goes for everything from the risks we run in leaving our homes every day (or even staying in them), to how we invest our 401ks, to our willingness or unwillingness to participate in dangerous sports like rock-climbing or ocean swimming, and even to business risks arising in our professional lives. We trust in our own decision-making, often with little information to go on.We certainly pay a price. For example, if we rely on the flow of information we simply happen to receive, we over-estimate our vulnerability to violent crime, natural disasters, traffic accidents, and the like. Our information flow isn't designed as an unbiased source for risk assessment.The authors have made careers of understanding risk. The most interesting point they make, I think, is that "societies reveal themselves by how they handle dangers." How we measure risks, including what it is that we consider risks to be risks to reveal, in action, what we value, what really matters to us. Is it life, simply put? Is it a life of a particular kind? Is it long life? Is it healthy life?"Very short introductions" are not for professionals -- they are for the majority of us who can benefit from an explicit, reflective framework for something we don't really have an informed way of thinking about. Maybe the most valuable thing we can learn is that there are, in fact, informed ways to think about and make decisions with respect to the risks that are ubiquitous in everyday life.

This book is the ONE reference I have come back to time and time again in researching constructing a recording studio. I have 4 or 5 books on the subject, but this one is the most relevant and explanatory reference. There are some great cost saving advice given in this tome. He explains how to do it right. Do yourself a favor and get this book first if you are researching how to build a recording studio. You will not need any other references.Kudos to Rod on a great book and all the help he gives for aspiring music studio enthusiasts!Future home of the MAJ G Recording Studio

I may be building from the ground up and I will refer to this to design all aspects. Other good reads are "Studio Builders Handbook" by Owsinski (I recommend as a 1st read it is very easy to go through) and "Handbook of Sound Studio Construction" Rooms for Recording and Listening" by Pohlmann ( I like Pohlmann's approach, cut to the chase then more details in later chapters if you need to go there).Rod Gervais is VERY knowledgeable and has credentials and real life experience out the wazoo. He can get utterly technical at times but you can just skip to what you really care about as needed. This book is like the total source you can whittle down to what you need.TOTALLY RECOMMEND!

I enjoyed many things about this book. First and foremost, the tone behind the words was great. You can somewhat tell Rod isn't a language major, but you can certainly tell he is an expert on the matter. Provided advantages and disadvantages for most situations. Everything is described in great detail, and the diagrams throughout the book are exceptionally helpful.The book seems to focus a bit on isolation (it is a pretty heavy topic) and actual construction. I was hoping for a bit more information than was included specifically for acoustic treatment, though I suppose considering the great amount that has been written about room acoustics in contrast to isolation, it makes more sense to take less of a focused approach in that regard. The information contained about treatment is still helpful, just not as in-depth as I'd like.Overall a great read - I recommend it to everyone I know in the audio world interested in how everything around you contributes to your recordings.

I already built one recording studio in 1989 when I was 21. We converted my parent's 2-car garage and my brother and I were trying (hoping) we would be able to buy the place... but when my mom came down with dementia/Alzheimer's in 2013 - time just flew by, and in march of last year Dad decided to sell the house, it turned out to be WAY outside of anything we might be able to afford. What that meant is that, I - as a drummer - suddenly had no safe place (or any place for that matter) to practice and we lost our 16-track studio set up. So now, we're getting ready to buy a small house, completely gut it, and soundproof it. I made a few mistakes the first time around because I was predominantly worried about mass, and we hung carpet tiles (Samples 18"x24" Carpet Samples that a a local carpet place sold for $1 each as interior door mats.) on 1"x2" furring strips so that they overlapped and covered the entire inside room with them (Over top of a 3-layer 12" thick Wall.) We had enough product, just not layered in the right configuration for maximum isolation.In fact, the book reveals that I only had 50% of the isolation that I could have had! Hell, with the right set up I could have played drums at 3:00AM in the morning without disturbing anyone.This time around, instead of $2,500 the studio is going to cost me about $50K, so I'm making sure I am doing it right - and this book delivers!I want to throw a nod out to John Sayer's site as well for guiding me to this book.

If want to learn how to design and construct a studio, isolation booth, or any structure where sound control as needed, this book is a great reference to have. Not only is this book easy to understand for anyone who can use tools, Mr. Gervais takes the time to debunk a number a myths as well. This is great given that everyone on the internet is an expert and there is always that guy who knows a guy who did something according to myth and it worked for him..........

I went to this book to help me construct parts of my home studio. It gave a great amount of detail and had me reading a bunch of parts. It's accurate and tells you many do's and don't's as well as opinions and different layout options. A great book for those looking to get serious about setting up a project studio worthy of being called professional!

Moreover, if you are interested in exploring the physics of acoustics in a more exhaustive manner, he points you to resources to be able to do so.Honestly, if there is one thing that you buy to help you in obtaining a better sound for your recordings it is this book; not a piece of outboard gear or a microphone. Bravo to the author.

Don't even think of attempting to build out a room without this book. Doing things 2 times is super expensive. Rod gives you a great deal of easy to understand info in this book that can help DIY folks and also help you deal with contractors that don't do 'soundproofing' all the time. A slender, focused book filled with practical suggestions and useful questions. Although designed primarily for folks who feel shy or sometimes awkward in social situations, this book seems very useful for international students and English language learners wanting to feel more comfortable in the United States.Although I'm a big fan of the book and have recommended it to several friends and university students, the title and subtitle seem somewhat inaccurate and make some overly bold claims. Many of the exercises are simply impossible for a shy, let alone "painfully shy" person, to actually use. Somehow I suspect the author is a natural extrovert and seems to underestimate the emotional barriers to starting conversations and/or engaging in savvy small talk. The book does, however, provide many helpful tips and savvy suggestions. Many readers appreciate the short stories and checklists. I just wish the book had a different, less flamboyant title.

I bought this thinking I was going to get a book. This is more like a pamphlet. It ended up being around roughly 28 pages long. Although some of what the author wrote was good, I feel like I very much overpayed for this information. For ten bucks, I should have gotten a lot more info or insight than what I got. Wished I would have spent my ten bucks on an actual book, rather than this. Oh well I guess

Getting your anxiety and fear under control.2. Recognizing who may be willing to talk.3. Starting a conversation4. Keeping it going.5. Ending it smoothly.6. Making a great first impression, including your physical appearance.7. How to be approachable but avoid looking like a creep.8. Following up with the relationships you'd like to continue.One, unsolicited, tip from me about physical appearance:In my experience, it's usually better to "dress up" in relationship to the "dress code" of those you are engaging. It's important to guage carefully how far "up." In every day business, for example, if you are meeting with people whose dress code is business casual, try wearing an average style suit or sports jacket and tie. On the other hand, avoid wearing a tuxedo to a pool party, unless you're trying to get thrown in the pool (a metaphor for drawing a lot of negative attention to yourself). By dressing slightly more formally than those with whom you are meeting or networking, you demonstrate a certain degree of respect that seems to be appreciated by many people.

Ack. I wish I'd read this years ago. It is well-known that introverts don't like small-talk (we're NOT shy, we just are stimulated by it) but as the author states, it is an important business skill. If you're an introvert it is a skill that doesn't come naturally but many of us have to fake it, bumble our way through or somehow else summon the energy, courage, whatever it takes if we want to be successful. I really appreciated learning the ARE acronym to open a conversation. I also was happy to see the section of how not to come across as a pick up artist because we really don't want any more of that PUA stuff out in the world.

Quick read to remind ourselves the etiquette of small talk. I think it is very helpful for people who struggle to make small conversations in unfamiliar groups. Breaks the whole process into what it is about, what works and what doesn't. Author did a great job in keeping the book small without going into motivational speeches by repeating the same point over and over.

I give this 4.5 stars. It's simple information, but it's information I needed someone to tell me.The biggest thing I got out of this book was a change of perspective. I was someone who DREADED small talk, I thought it was pointless. Plus, all it seemed to do was make me uncomfortable. It was a pretty big part of my social anxiety. However, Andy mentions how small talk is necessary in order to build a base for a conversation so you can then go deeper. That made so much sense to me. Along with his other useful tips, I feel much more comfortable and open when I'm around people.I appreciated the quick and easy read. Thanks, Andy!

About the Author

Gene Mesher holds a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from the University of Arizona, a M.S. in Biology from the University of Michigan and a Master s of Science in Engineering from the University of Washington. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and CD combo so far. It is the most informative and trustworthy system for learning Burmese that I have come across so far and I have been looking for months!This is an intensive program and is probably only suited to those who are willing to put lots of time and effort into learning Burmese properly. If you are after a system that will just teach you what you need to know to visit as a tourist I would recommend Burmese By Ear (which can be downloaded for free, just ask google;)) over this combo, but I would recommend spending the money on This Burmese for Beginners Book for anyone wanting to thoroughly learn Burmese to communicate effectively for long stays in Burma.Also I have friends in Burma who I visit every year and can say that they have taught me enough to know that other systems (I wont mention names but they are usually the first you might find if looking for how to learn Burmese on the internet) are not trustworthy and don't teach enough to be understood well in Burma.This book and CD combo works well because it teaches the grammar and sentance structure, the whys of how Burmese works and proper pronouciation, and I have found other systems to be lacking in these things. This criticism does not include Burmese By Ear, which is the only other system I trust.Hope this helps you!

This is a great learning resource if you have the time and patience to do it. I am still using it and find it to be extremely helpful. It provides tools needed to understand the language and its grammar. It really is the best I have found for learning to speak, read and write the language.

I bought the book and tape because I'm teaching a class of pre-literate Burmese refugees. They are charming, retirement-age folks who have never been to school. I'm hoping my difficulties with Burmese (considerable!) will show them how wonderfully well they're doing in English. They think the book is very amusing. I can now say "Thank you" and count to six on a good day. I hope they can pass the tests necessary for citizenship. and I can count to ten.Thanks for your interestMargaret

Thorough study with useful phrases that are ready for immediate use. Nicely laid out and works for the English speaking student to grasp quickly

I do wish there were some pauses and prompts to repeat between each of the audio clips on the CD's. The book is well organized and supported by the CD's, the combination gives you a thorough structure in which to struggle with the tonal language that is Burmese. I intend to be able to cover the basics before arriving in Myanmar and hopefully master "I would like a beer please...No, make that two beers" in time for Dinner on the first day. I think I have my hands full and Burmese for Beginners is keeping me on track very nicely thank you.

One of my favorite art books since it also encompasses much history of popular culture much better than any history book would.Your old cranky auntie might not like it however, as it is Real everyday popular culture and politics so no topic is off-limits--death, condoms, revolution, dishonesty of certain public officials--each stamp is a reminder of some event that raised a stir temporarily or put the world on notice. Funny often, lewd sometimes, always original.Highly recommended.

"The Miracle Club" is a fantastic work, I would say it is Mitch Horowitz’s best book so far, and I’ve read the majority of his book, and "The Miracle Club" is one of the best books I’ve read in the last decade. In it Horowitz addresses one of the largest failings of the New Age, New Thought, Self-Help, and Human Potential Movement books to be written in recent years, most importantly, the failure of such teachers to encourage their students to look at ethics.I’ve been heavily involved in the New Age and Holistic movement for over a decade now, and have found that there is a serious lack of ethics and moral understanding in much of the modern teachings that are being sold to students. In particular this is very noticeable in the Law of Attraction (LoA) and New Thought movements, as Horowitz points out The Science of Getting Rich, which was used to create The Secret, was a tritest by a socialistic minister on how to use positive thinking to even out the power balance between the Owners and the Works, and now has been used to create a weak and watered down understanding of how to use positive thinking to get worldly goods, without looking at the other aspects of how New Thought/LoA can be used to better the world, along with oneself.This is not to say that Horowitz doesn’t give insight into how to use Positive Metaphysics to gain material goods, however, what Horowitz focuses on is how to dig deep into yourself and make sure what you believe you want is what you want, and then how to go about using Positive Metaphysics, a concrete directed aim, and the knowledge that you may have to apply “real life” skills to help bring about the changes in your life; it’s not just about positive thinking.Horowitz not only stands on the shoulders of giants in the making of this book, but he reaches far above them. He has taken teachings and concepts that are often consider passé or outdated and turned them from dross into gold for new generations of spiritual seekers, giving guideposts and trailer makers for fellow travelers, and more importantly, hope for those who are trying to find ways to live a spiritual life, and yet make change in the world.

This is the first book I have read of the authors, I came to know him from an interview on inspire nation, so I was excited to read this book, I pre ordered it on my kindle and audible, this book is very deep and thought provoking, with mitch being a very well know historian on new thought, esoterics and the like he delves deep into those aspects. I learned a lot from this book he talks a lot about the new thought leaders of the past and with Neville goodard being one of my favorites I got to learn a lot about him and his past. I really enjoyed this book its not your typical woo woo type book but gets to the history of the new thought era and positive thinking. It gave me a lot of new insights. Like Mitch quotes be your own experiment thats the only way you will know and that is point on.

Mitch's work is intelligent, exciting, and thorough. I have spent the last few hours going over his latest offering and it's densely packed with every relevant topic and how to put those topics clearly in motion!

I first heard about this book On Whitley Strieber's Dreamland. It's one of the best of its kind I've ever read. Horowitz lays out his beliefs, techniques, and philosophy is such a clear, straightforward way that I was riveted throughout. What's particularly interesting is that as a former editor, he used to buy New Age - New Thought - books like this. But The Miracle Club is unique.Horowitz provides historical backdrops for the idea that our imaginations and emotions create our experiences. I found the material on Neville Goddard fascinating and was intrigued by the author's inclusion of personal anecdotes about how Goddard's simple techniques have worked for him. Now I'm off to buy Horowitz's other books. This one really deserves 10 stars!

I've been a fan of Mitch and his work for years now. His excellence in telling history knows no bounds. His entry into working with your own thoughts is up to the challenge too. Your thoughts are causative. Yes. The methods described have cousins in many schools of thought and the occult. Those are the places people searched for real methods to gain real results. Mitch brings them here. The directions of achieving proper mental state and what to do with it are worth your price of admission. I found myself highlighting many paragraphs for further investigation. But the book. Read it. Next, Try it!

Being such a huge fan of the author makes it really exciting to get my hands on his newest copy. How thoughts become reality is the way life works.

Faaaantastic.I had to skim through most of it after getting through half of it, but that's because I received what I needed to after many, many hours of this study. Mitch says a LOT, interwoven with stories, humor, and a ton of study and experience.And yet, he remains humble and doesn't say quite a bit of what he has personally experienced to keep the book as objective as can be.I'd like to hear the stories he isn't telling!And since I think my account is definitely not linked to the one I use or even look at, i place my contact belowww.
