This is a good starter book on what turtles and tortoises require. It outlines many of the types of turtles and tortoises, has tons of color pictures, and is chock full of info.It goes over habitats, feeding, breeding, hibernation, dangers (fire ants, spinach) etc. including practical tips from the authors.Unfortunately, this book convinced me that it is not very easy to keep turtles and tortoises and this would be a major investment and worry, so I decided not to.Oh well.

Great book to learn about turtles but not so much for Tortoises

When I got my turtle, Tim, I didn't know a thing about turtles - so I got this book as well as did a ton of research online. This book has TONS of good information (and pictures) about how to care for and house turtles. My turtle is several years old now, and is very happy and healthy. I recommend this to anyone who is looking to get a pet turtle. The reality of turtle-keeping is that it is a LOT of work. Turtles are dirty, and even with high powered filters their tanks need constant cleaning. I didn't know what I was getting in to, but it's worth the effort! Turtles are wonderful pets, and this book will give you all the basic information you need to know.

A bit old...but still relevant in robotic design...technology has improved but the fundamentals remain...

I just finished participating in the MIT 6.270 Autonomous Robot Competition. This book really pulls together everything you need to understand how to build a robot from Lego parts, and interface it to the real world using a variety of sensors and actuators (aka motors). There is so much to be learned by actually BUILDING a robot - this is a great book to help you dig into your own project. You can order the same hardware and software used in the MIT class off the internet as well.

I purchased this book as a 'recommended' book for a class almost nine years ago and it's still interesting.

This is a great book though I will probably not rank it good. Should be acceptable. It's a really old book.

This book presents an introduction to various aspects of robot building and planning. It is written as an undergraduate textbook, and contains numerous exercises throughout the text. The book assumes that students and other readers will have access to Handyboards and LEGO Technic equipment, as well as a desktop PC and hobbyist-level soldering equipment. The book walks the reader through analyzing a Handyboard, how to use it, how to build custom sensors and motors, and how to write programs in assembly language. All of this information would be very useful to first-year engineering students as it would help them put theory from many of their other classes into practice. Nevertheless, most of the tasks and programs described in the book could actually be built with a standard LEGO RCX brick. On the other hand, a person who masters the material in this book would be able to take advantage of the extra sensors and motors that the Handyboard supports and build far more sophisticated robots than would be possible with LEGO Mindstorms equipment. Anyone who builds robots using LEGO equipment, whether with a Handyboard or an RCX, will find information in this book about Braitenberg vehicles, LEGO design, control theory, and robotics contests quite useful. The introduction to Assembly language in Appendix A is also presented in an easily accessible style.

The basic content of this book is excellent. It provides a readily accessible introduction to the principles of engineering. This book could easily be used as the text for a first year course in a unified engineering curriculum including Computer Science. The one flaw with this book is that it appears to have been rushed out by the publisher. Many of the page references are to the wrong pages and some of the pictures are rather blurry. Finally, the instructions for creating and downloading ICB files to incorporate assembly language modules for interrupt side programming and similar purposes needs to be reworked in a future edition. I hope that a future edition will also have a chapter on electrical design and construction techniques to compliment the chapter on mechanical techniques. I also look forward to a third chapter on sensing and possibly a second chapter on control theory. Regardless, this is overall an excellent book and should be acquired by anyone interested in small robots.

Kind of funny, this book showed up as a suggestion on some random unrelated page, and I had to comment.I took an Intro to Robotics course a number of years ago, the author of this book being the teacher of the course.All I can say at this point is that parts and components may change over time, but the basic lessons of robotics remain the same. And these lessons have helped me even to this day, most notably forcing myself to reject a mindset of "it should just work". (Thanks, Fred!)Humans do so many things so easily that until you try to program a robot yourself, you can't really appreciate whats actually involved.That's sort of the other thing that I got out of the course and this book - the ability to deconstruct whats involved in these "simple things", like accurately walking towards a source of light, and using that information on the job (lasers, motion control, sensors, etc).In a way, this book is good not only for people interested in robotics, but also for people interested in humans and how they work. When trying to figure out how to make a robot do something, you have to first figure out how YOU do it, then adapt that to the available hardware.Plus... You get to play with Lego's, man.

I usually get two guide books for every trip I take, Lonely Planet and DK (recently I started to try out Fodor's. I don't think I like it because its layout or format is kind of confusing. Maybe I'm not used to it yet). Compared to DK, LP is much more detailed in my opinion, but DK offers more photos. I felt compelled to write a review because I found DK is getting harder and harder to read due to its extremely small font, especially the description next to a photo or illustration). Maybe I'm getting old and need reading glasses (in fact my husband said he couldn't read anything on DK, lol). After reading it for a while, my eyes just start to hurt and I don't feel like reading it anymore. I don't know why the publisher make the font so small. I would imagine older people would have a hard time reading it. BTW, I'm 41-year-young :)

I really like eyewitness travel guides. I got the same book when I went to Rome 15 years ago. I am using it again on this trip. One thing I did notice, that in 15 years my eyesight has declined. And it's very difficult to read the small print. Oh well, maybe one of my younger travel companions will be able to read it for us. Hey, Eyewitness! If you read this, please give us Kindle versions. Makes it much easier to travel with your guides. That way we don't have to lug around these heavy (1.5lb) books. Then I could also adjust the text size. (This is why this guide loses 1 star in my review)

Great Pictures. Information seemed dated.Large heavy book. Better information available in the Fodors book which is a pound less. The pictures are beautiful and this would make a good coffee table or bookcase book, but not a good book to travel with. I couldn't find operating hours quickly for attractions. It annoyed me that I could not find the info in a logical place.

The indexes are so inadequate that the book is only minimally useful. Why on earth is it too difficult to do them well? I am required to search and look for cross indices and find after standing on the street looking for references to what I am looking for and finally then find only the most minimal information on what I am looking at? I found the guides far more frustrating than useful. I would not buy these guides again when I travel.

This was so handy and easy to use. Love the way the book is organised by areas of the cities. Really liked the foldout map with the color-coded walking only streets. The book fit easily into my purse. The travel tips in the back, specific to Budapest were spot on and very helpful. Having the book added a lot of confidence for us navigating a big city on our own. Will most definitely be buying similar Top 10 books for other travel destinations.

Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel are my favorite series of travel guides. DK produces the most detailed and beautiful photographic guides. I have one for every country or city Iâ€™ve visited since first discovering them 18 years ago while living in the UK. I still buy the books for trip planning (and the gorgeous visuals), but now I also purchase and download the Kindle version of their 'Lists of 10 Top' guides for the specific location to lighten my luggage load.

This Top 10 Guide is another winner and was an essential companion on our 5-day trip to Budapest in April. The recommendations and options were spot-on. We carried it everywhere we went during the daytime, and as a result often found hidden gems while on rambling walks through the various sections of Buda and Pest. The high-quality photos make finding things so much easier, and now serve as a great reminder of our time in this amazing city. The Gellert Baths (on the cover) are an experience not to be missedâ€¦though friends said that all the baths in Budapest are worth a visit, this is really a special experience. Another great Budapest experience was drinking late into the night with locals at the cool ruin bars, several of which are listed in the book (and then you can ask locals for the others to visit - the 'hot' ruin bars seem to change regularly and by season). By visiting the Top 10 sites, walking most places or taking public transportation, you'll have a magical trip.

I love this brand of book for whenever I travel, and this book for Peru was just as good. It gives a lot of details on the different places, and it was especially helpful when we went to Machu Picchu. I would recommend this to anyone going to Peru

Rodeo Girl is a spectacular and refreshing collection of photographs that will surely appeal to anyone interested in photography, the rodeo, or both. As an age of technology engulfs our world like a whirlwind, Lisa Eisner's lens takes the viewer through frames of the rodeo as though it were a ballad to an endangered species, a slow, lasting glimpse before it disappears forever into the sunset. Eisner finds in the rodeo what most photographers only dream of -- an opportunity to craft deliberate compositions of the spontaneous. And she takes advantage of that opportunity brilliantly. While many of the photographs are indeed of rodeo girls, the palette of subjects depicted is actually much broader. Personally, I like Eisner's sense of photographic artistry, and the high print quality helps do it justice. Among other things, with photographs in colour as well as black & white, warm tones seem to be preferred throughout which makes for a classic appearance and suits the rodeo theme well. To truly enjoy this book, set aside any preconceived notions you might have, take it one page at a time, and turn each one slowly. Growing up in Cheyenne and being a bit of a cowgirl myself, the beautiful photos in Rodeo Girl, capturing glimpses of "behind the shutes and corrals" activities of Cheyenne Frontier Days and other local rodeos, really brought back wonderful memories of those years. Plus, I grew up with Lisa so that made the book even more enjoyable!

I really like the movie. But I didn't order the book. Which I received. I liked it when the woman stood up for herself.

I'm really disappointed. As a current title holder and someone who has competed for national titles I don't think this book is really accurate. It is billed as a rodeo queen pictorial, but the pictures are so limited. It's about rodeo culture. Not rodeo queens.There are so many pictures of random rodeo scenes. In fact, I think it gives the layperson a really negative view of the rodeo culture. The pictures are over exposed and the way they are printed make them seem so dated. It's almost embarrasing. The few pictures that she had of queens weren't great, nothing to write home about. If they were of myself, I probably wouldn't buy the book.To me it was a disappointing waste of money. But if she got THIS published, I know I could put my personal photos together, not rake the time to title them and be a hit!

I was disappointed in this book. I have met and spent time with Miss Rodeo America 1999 and 2000, and the Miss Rodeo California's from 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 as well as held rodeo queen titles of my own.I purchased this book as a resource for rodeo and queen competitions. I expected a book about the life of a rodeo queen and some of the challenges and triumphs that are experienced by the first ladies of rodeo. This book is unfortunately of little to no use for current or potential rodeo queen competitors.Much to my surprise, this book is a compilation of untitled photos that depict candid images of rodeo queens, children, and cowboys in a variety of rodeo-ish settings. As a coffee table book, this would be great, if all I wanted was a book of pictures.

I was a very early adopter of Queen. I had the benefit of an avant-garde FM station in Philly, WMMR, that was always a step ahead of actual commercial releases. Listening to DJ Carol Miller's evening show I heard cuts from Queen's first album prior to its commercial release. As soon as I heard those iconic guitars I was hooked! I had never heard guitars with that unique timbre before. It, along with Freddie's unique vocals, created totally unique sounds from a bunch of guys who knew how to rock. Bought "Queen" the day it was released and couldn't get enough of it, until the release of Queen II. The second album told a story and Freddie's writing wove the songs together into a tapestry of good vs. evil. I just, some 40+ years later, pulled out my original LP and gave it a spin. The songs were every bit as wonderful as I remembered but the sound quality was not up to the quality of the music. Virtually no bass, ragged treble and compressed dynamics.What to do? Search on Amazon for a remastering, of course. And there it was... a 2011 remaster job by none other than Bob Frickin' Ludwig. Those of you who are into the audio scene will recognize Ludwig as a mastering legend. And, yes he did his magic on this CD. It is UNBELIEVABLE! Yes there is bass, very appropriately balanced. The ragged treble is gone and the stereo effects of the original have been optimized. Dynamics! Yes they are here too. This remastering has brought this wonderful music back to life with clarity and drive. Kudos to Mr. Ludwig. It must be satisfying to do what he has done with this classic album and restored the beauty and bit of the original album as the guys played it.Buy this CD. I feel guilty that I paid so little for it.

It is a great album but I received one that was faulty. They gave me a replacement that had the same problem. So, be careful when choosing to buy this album. I think a whole bunch of them weren't "pressed" right. The music is unbelievably great, as I have it on CD already. I just happen to be nostalgic when it comes to certain records, such as this.

UPDATE: Received replacement. The hole in the replacement is also too small. This indicates a manufacturing error on a larger scale. I was able to push it onto the rod to fit--but buyer beware. You can see how wonky it sits on my record player.Original review: The hole on this record was TOO SMALL to fit onto my record player. Ordered a replacement, if it also doesn't fit then it is likely a larger scale manufacturing issue and I will update this review.

Queen II saw the band finding their theatrical vision that would grow into fruition on A Night at the Opera. Simply put, the great moments were here and this is probably their heaviest album but the great songs weren't quite here yet. Due to what the band would become, Queen II is an intriguing listen especially if you didn't discover their early albums until later like I did. And you have to respect their ambition. This is certainly stronger than all of the '80s albums sans The Game and in the ballpark of News of the World. "Seven Seas of Rhye" is the most well known song here and for good reason. It is the most developed song and along with the very good "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" and the short ditty "Nevemore" really shows what would come. Otherwise, you have moments of absolute brilliance in the heavy as sin "Ogre Battle" and the epics "Father to Son" and "The March of the Black Queen". "The Loser In the End" is very good and is one of the better Roger Taylor tracks and the emotional "Funny How Love Is" is strong as well.. "Some Day One Day" also really plays like a template to the excellent Brian May tracks that would emerge later in "'39" and "Long Away". And for these reasons you can see why this is the favorite of long time fans which I totally respect. Queen II is very interesting and is a grower but if you're a newcomer you may want to start with A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, or Sheer Heart Attack before you get to this one.

It's been said by many reviewers here, but I'll say it again: Queen 2 is the band's best record. I love or really like all of Queen's records but this one is just amazing. I think that other Queen records seem to always have that one song (or more than one if we're talking Hot Space...) that just didn't speak to me; which I attribute to the their adventurous musical nature and unique sound - which is a good thing. However, on Queen 2 every song is just perfect.

Am I the only one who loves "Funny How Love Is"? Try singing along with it. Anyway, what can I say about this masterwork. This album has a certain something about it, just like the follow-up release, and the one after that. Like "Led Zeppelin IV," this mish-mash of styles just works. Honestly, how many other bands can (a) sing this well, (b) write such great songs, (c) play their instruments so well? How many? Listen to this record, you unbelievers. You lords and lady creatures. Then wonder why you ever bought an ELP record.

I purchased this Deluxe Version hoping the remix would brighten up the sound, as all the generations of CD I've owned of this album seem to have lost something as compared to the LP versions that I owned in the 70s (especially Procession). Well, I don't hear too much of a difference on side White compared to the previous generations of the CD, but side Black definitely sounds brighter, namely, the huge intro to March of the Black Queen, which for my ears is what most makes this album worth owning. So I'm pleased.The additional songs are pretty cool. I won't describe them but I'll suggest they're worth owning, moreso that the extras on the Hollywood Records release. Actually, If they'd included an instrumental mix of Millionaire Waltz on A Day at the Races, I'd have purchased that one as well.

this book was one of the first books I purchased when deciding to go gray...THERE is no one book or manual on how to , it is a personal journey, some cut it all off, some wear hats, scarves, headbands some have styling tricks. There's so many different approaches and here's the kick, there is so much more to it than hair! I have a friend who said why would I want to look old? She had jet black over dyed hair and dressed like a very old hippie. As the author stated in the book, keep the pep in you step and shoulders back...actually she did not say that exactly I made it up ;)

This is a well written book but sometimes a book written to persuade to one action may also convince the reader to do the opposite. This is the case here. I initially mulled stopping coloring my hair to save money. While I am okay with the idea I found out I do not like the gray pattern in my hair had nor can I tolerate how washed out I look. So I am choosing a less expensive route and began using a demi permanent color that does not produce a root line. Then if I change my mind going gray wonâ€™t be so difficult.

I loved this book nd passed it along from girlfriend to girlfriend. A quick interesting red on many levels. Serious, humorous, inspiring, thought provoking!!!! Buying a copy now for a relative as we were just having this discussion today.

Great book and I really liked it but I just am not ready to take the step of going grey all the way. I cut off all my hair and stopped dying it. It was a shock to be so white after having brown dyed hair for so long and it made me feel like I was faded out. This author has really done a good job of writingâ€‹ about her experience and others and made me laugh a lot.

Helped me make the choice to go natural (and not feel like a crazy woman during the process). The book is written with warmth, intelligence, and humor.

As much as I appreciated reading someoneâ€™s perspective on going gray, I didnâ€™t find this book to be especially encouraging. And I felt slightly annoyed throughout, skipping past many parts that felt whiny, self absorbed and unrelatable. I applaud accepting yourself and doing what makes you happy at any age. I wish more people, especially those in their 30-40â€™s, would write about their journey to go gray.

Very inspirational to me.

A guitarist, composer, record producer, and painter, Jon Larsen began researching micrometeorites in 2009. Great book and documentation of something that no one ever thinks about. It includes both micrometeorites and other particles of the same size, like those left behind from fireworks. A beautiful expression of how nothing really ever disappears. I don't want to take away any stars, but I wish the image print quality was a little better, or it came with access to higher resolution images. If it is published as an art book by Phaidon Press, I would buy it all over again. I think it would make a great present, for a kid if it comes with a microscope, or for an adult that like geology or the astronomy.

This is a good book that can inspire many amateur and professional scientists to undertake a vaiety of projects. But there are some major flaws, the most glaring being the absence of captioning on many of the photos. Most have no information on what we are seeing. For example, page 42 has a heading â€œcryptocrystalline micrometeoritesâ€ followed by 8 pages with no captions at all. Are these all â€œcryptocrystalline micrometeoritesâ€? They include many different appearing morphologies, some resembling, to my eye barred, olivine micrometeorites. How do we tell them apart? We are told more material on each image can be obtained from the author on request. This seems unfair to not give the reader more information in the book they purchased, rather than needing to go an extra step. I, for example, want to know more about all of them. Would the author send me all those files? The illustrations have plenty of room at bottom for captions and explanations. Their absence turns many pages into essentially a coffee-table book of odd objects. It would be very useful also to have more explanatory text about the various categories. How, for example, does one ablation spherulites from cryptocrystalline meteorites? A table summarizing the types and the basic characteristics would be incredibly handy. Oh, and appealling to routine chemical anlyses to distinguish the types? I agree, likely needed, but most readers will likely not have an SEM on hand to do such analyses. The last section on â€œroad dust crystalsâ€ has stunning photos of single crystals, but weak explanations. Is it too much to tell readers which ones are likely pyritie, pyrite pseudomorphed by iron oxides, garnet dodecahedra, etc.? It is a shame that this section has so little information content. I really like this book and the doors it opens, but am frustrated because it could be so much more.

This is a fascinating book about an overlooked phenomenon where zillions of tons of "stardust" rains down on Earth each year. With a good hand lens or microscope you can find these tiny spheres most anywhere fine debris accumulates. Great project for kids. This is one of the only books for the lay person on the topic that I've ever seen. Good value too.

I found this book in the new books section of my library and checked it out. The book entranced me with outstanding images of extremely beautiful very tiny objects photographed through a high-powered microscope. They are photographs of tiny meteorites raining down on us every day. But you do not see them, they are so small. And, they are so beautiful.

A wonderful treatise on micrometeorites in our modern environment. Excellent photos and discussion of the characteristics of both extraterrestrial and terrestrial samples.

Good Book. It gives the reader a clear bundled perspective on the different crimes and their impact caused by globalization and porous borders. You have read the articles and seen the reports on the news but Naim pieces it all together and delivers it in an interesting book.

Originally only ordered this book as part of the required text for one of my classes, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the perspective the author provides, as it has made me reexamine a number of my stances on globalization and modern approaches aimed at addressing international crime.

I really enjoy books like this one. Naim goes very in depth about how much crime there really is in the global economy and that it is extremely profitable. It's can be a real eye opener for a lot of sheltered Americans. It's the real life side of things like Taken, Breaking Bad, and Scarface. There is also a documentary video to go along with it and really shows a lot of the things talked about in the book.

Most of the information is not disclosed openly in the press. Very informative and eye opening. Numbers are not up to date but concepts illustrate what has been happening and developing in the trade licit and illicit.

Fascinating look on what's going on right under our noses. A must read for news junkies or TV drama watchers for the background behind criminal enterprises.

This is a dense expose of the dark side of globalization. The depth and detail of topics seems out of place for a book that can fit in your pocket. Illicit reads like crime thriller or espionage novel but provides tangible facts that are useful for the professional and accessible to the layman. The most pivotal quote Naim's assertion that "illicit traffic is about transactions and not products." There is a solution within this quote, one that shifts enforcement resources to blocking the transfer of money and contraband rather than the contraband itself. Illicit is a modern handbook of global crime trends that will leave you alarmed, disgusted and enlightened.

"Illicit" by Moises Naim is a good primer on the underground economy. Mr. Naim's experience as an Editor at Foreign Policy magazine appears to have helped the author hone his skills at synthesizing an impressive quantity of third-party research to support his thesis. It is also evident that Mr. Naim's discussions with numerous high-level personal and professional contacts around the world have helped him reflect on the topic at length, leading him to offer many pages of thoughtful critique and analysis. The end result is a balanced and nuanced book that makes a valuable contribution to our understanding about an increasingly urgent and worrisome problem.Some might also read Mr. Naim's description of how globalization empowers illicit trade as a riposte to free market cheerleaders such as Thomas Friedman, who tend to equate entrepreneurship with utopianism. To the contrary, we find that many counterfeiters and traffickers are highly skilled and creative people who excel at exploiting decentralized and flexible underground marketing, sales and production networks for personal gain but at great expense to our collective peace and security. According to Mr. Naim, "profits...was the name of the game" for nuclear weapons traders such as A.Q. Khan, and it is on this basis that the struggle to curtail illict trade must be based.Given that governments around the world are currently losing this struggle, Mr. Naim argues for a strategy of harm reduction including the removal of the artificial barriers that create myriad profit opportunities for criminals. For example, this might include the decriminalization of marijuana. The author reasons that law enforcement could better focus on much more dangerous activities and on enforcing the laws in more readily attainable ways, such as prosecuting major drug dealers and the employers of illegal aliens. I found Mr. Naim's recommendations to be refreshingly commonsensical when compared with the more politically expedient but ineffective supply-side fixes that are proposed by far too many policymakers today.Regrettably, Mr. Naim fails to take the book to a deeper level of analysis by making a stronger connection between neoliberal ideology, democracy and illicit trade. To be sure, Mr. Naim highlights the fact that some places on our planet have become anarchic, controlled by criminal gangs of all sorts whose economic power has allowed them to buy off their local governments (if they exist at all). However, he does not acknowledge the fairly obvious fact that illicit trade might represent precisely what neoliberalism desires: pure capitalism without the restraining influence of government. Might his recommendations have been made stronger by insisting on ways to achieve meaningful social and environmental justice through radical democratic reforms, rather than plugging holes in an already far too leaky and decrepit system of global neoliberal governance?Setting aside this reasonable difference in opinion, I found this book to be an engagingly interesting and informative read. I highly recommend it to all.

This was very informative and eye opening. I wasn't aware of the full breadth and depth of illicit trade before reading it. If this is a topic you are only slightly interested in, I would recommend this book.

Finally, I have a simple and fast reference that allows me to use this great program. Even with other books including Kelby books, I always felt hesitant to use the program as it always seemed that something happened that I didn't understand or I was frustrated trying to do something and couldn't quickly and easily find the answer. Now I can.

I have a lot of Scott Kelby's books. Really like his style. This book is very helpful. I keep a copy of it next to my computer at all times. Highly recommend anything written by this author. He really knows his stuff and is able to share that knowledge in a way that is easy for most people to understand.

Where has this book been? I have been using Photoshop since version 2.0, up through the current CC edition. Photoshop is a tool -- a mean to an end for me -- a way to produce the best results I can get from My Nikon D4 and D800 bodies. When I am trying to improve a photo image, I don't want to have to read dozens of pages in a lengthy chapter, or search endlessly for ways of achieving something. If I could, I'd want to pick up my phone and call Scott Kelby and ask him, "Scott, how do I...?" And suddenly I don't even have to use the phone, and I even have pictures to help me! Does this book answer ALL the possible questions about Photoshop. Probably not. But it has been useful already in the short few days it has been unwrapped and laying next to my desk top PC.

These books didnâ€™t go on an on, but got to the point and so were inspiring to go try them out in Photoshop. Liked.

Scott's done a service to Photoshop users that he earlier did for Lightroom users. I teach a high school digital design class and us the book all the time to refer students who want to do 'some thing extra' to photos in their work.

Discovering this book has increased my understanding of, and abilities with Elements almost instantly. If I want to do something I have never done before in Elements, I find the page in this book and follow it. It makes Photoshop seem easy.

This book is as advertised. There are pages and pages of how-to and short cuts for PS users. it is NOT a sit-and-read book; rather, there are 150+ issues or problems with solutions. it is readable and useful.

Can always trust Scott to delver a good book. When Lightroom is not doing the job you go to Photoshop. But how did I do that last time?
