About the Author
Gilles Weissmann studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, exploring Egyptian painting, sculpture, Chinese Buddhist art, Mesopotamian art, and Roman art. He owns a studio and school of iconography in Paris, where he teaches and paints.

The ancient Byzantine art and spiritual practice of iconography is experiencing a great revival in many countries and religious denominations. M. Weissmann's book is an excellent addition to manuals available in English( which are too few). The very good, clear photos show the colors and steps much better than many books. It has an excellent chapter on properly drawing and constructing the image without confusing the geometrically challenged. The author demonstrates both the Russian and Greek styles. I also appreciated the reasonable price.
This book does give you step by step instructions on how to draw an icon, and it guides you through the process of icon painting. That said, I would recommend it as a complement to an actual class, because if you are completely new to icon painting the choice of materials can be overwhelming.Overall, a great resource for beginners.
The writing is thoughtful and precise; very easy to understand and the photos are excellent in giving visual examples of each step in the process. I am really excited about the content and grateful to the author, Gilles Weissmann. I appreciate the historical background which is enlightening and inspiring. Spiritually, this is a gem and I feel the oneness of those on this journey as I study and learn and pray the iconographer's prayer. This is exceptionally well done.
Good step-by-step instruction and loaded with lots of information about why Icons are painted the way they're painted. As a beginner, it was exactly what I was looking for. Plenty of examples, exhaustive list of needed supplies and many beautiful Icons to try and paint (or write).
Beautiful book. I wish all the icons it showed were full size. A few important ones to me are 1/4 - 1/2 size so it is hard to see the details. Not sure how accurate the colors are. They seem a bit dark, but the book is very helpful. Thank you so much. I truly wish all the Icons were, full size.
Nicely detailed guide to the beginner in the field of icon creating. It is not a complete and detailed guide such that one could start right out to make an icon with only the information in the book, but it was complete enough so that a good grounding in all the areas was started.
