About the Author
Ron Blakey taught geology for over 37 years at the university level, mostly at NAU in Flagstaff, AZ. His specialty is the sedimentary rocks of the Colorado Plateau and surrounding areas including the Pacific Coast region. He has published well over 50 papers, many as single author, in national and international journals and symposia and two books, one published by Springer (see below). For the last 25 years, he has constructed paleogeographic maps from regional to global scale – these maps appear in many published geological papers, books, monographs, museums, and are used extensively in general education at all levels. His maps are based on the geological literature and are constructed as accurately as possible to mimic satellite views of ancient Earth. Many individual maps represent 40 – 80 or more hours of work each. Wayne Ranney has been studying the geology of the American West since coming to live in Arizona in 1975. His first residence was at the bottom of the Grand Canyon where he worked as a backcountry ranger. He claims this is where he got all of the rocks in his head. In 1978 he enrolled in the geology program at Northern Arizona University, obtaining bachelor's and master's degrees. It was here that took classes from his colleague Dr. Ron Blakey while working his way through graduate school as a river guide. He began working as a shipboard geology interpreter in 1989 and has traveled the world ever since, completing over one hundred expeditions to the Arctic, the Amazon, Africa, Siberia, and Antarctica. These far-flung adventures have allowed him to see and learn about many different kinds of landscapes but he always returns to the red rock cliffs and canyon country of his native southwest. Wayne currently works as a geology lecturer for Smithsonian Journeys and is a retired adjunct faculty member of Yavapai and Coconino colleges. He is an award-winning author of many books including Sedona Through Time, Carving Grand Canyon, and Ancient Landscapes of the Colorado Plateau. He lives with his wife Helen in Flagstaff, Arizona.

This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in the geology of the American west. It's also a great overview to geology in general. It is definitely geared towards people with a college degree. It covers basic geological terms and processes. It also walks the reader through the creation of North America with beautiful, GIS-rendered, paleogeographical maps and photographs of representative outcrops of the formations described. My only complaint is that it frequently has figures with multiple illustrations, e.g. Figure 1a, 1b, 1c, etc. that run over multiple pages and the caption is found on the first page. Thus you have to turn back to read the caption for many of the figures, despite the fact that there is ample white space on each figure's page to situate a caption. Also, some of the paleogeographic maps are quite small, again in spite of the fact that there is ample white space in the book. I hope that future editions will correct this annoying flaw. Nonetheless, this is the best overview to the geology of western North America that I have found for the educated non-specialist.
I've been looking for a book on the geology of western North America for several years. This looked good. Most of the illustrations are quite good. Unfortunately, some of the writing is atrocious, especially in the first half of the book. I doubt anyone edited this book. Pages 2 and 3 have Era's, Period's, and Epoch's, which should be Eras, Periods, and Epochs. On page 3 they say that the Archean and Proterozoic Eon's (sic) each have three periods. The table on page 3 shows the Proterozoic with three Eras, not Periods, and the Archean with four Eras, not Periods. Other pages have "sedimemtary" instead of sedimentary, and "arial" instead of aerial. Captions are often pages away from the associated pictures, even though there's plenty of space on the pages with the pictures. All of this may sound picayune, but it made reading difficult.
The book is interesting as are the pictures but the kindle edition has no maps which are apparently supposed to be an important part of the book as indicated by the book title. This kind of information should be noted somewhere obvious in the description of the book.
I just finished an OUTSTANDING book!“Ancient Landscapes of Western North America†by Ronald C. Blakey and Wayne D. Ranney traces the geologic history of the the Western North America from Rodina (ca 1100 million years ago, Ma) thru Pangea (ca 350 Ma) to modern times.What really amazes me about this book is that it is exceptionally easy to read! Most books on Geology and Paleogeography at almost obtuse in both the language used and the terminology. In addition, they tend to be boring. Not this book! First, the language used is immediately understandable to anyone with a High School education! Second, every term needed is well defined. Third the story presented is exciting to read! The authors have done an outstanding job of presenting the materials in such a way that one does not already have to be an expert to read it!If that weren’t already enough, this book has outstanding maps and pictures. If there were no text, the pictures themselves are interesting and tell the story! The pictures are spectacularly beautiful! And yet they contribute to the story in such a way that you know exactly what the author was referring to!This book could used in teaching how the earth formed and how it came to be in almost any school level from grade school on! It does focus on the Western United States with somewhat of a bias towards the South West. The story is really universal, though! What happened in the Western North America happened all over the world with local peculiarities. After reading and studying this book, one is certainly ready to understand the processes happening elsewhere.I really cannot say enough positive about this book: it is that good!
This is a wonderful book. The geologic history of western North America is long and complicated; the story must be read from the clues of rocks spread widely about the continent. The authors do a marvelous job of revealing the clues, putting them back in correct place and time, to reveal the geologic history of the west. Many geology books simplify things so much that they are incorrect; other books are so technical that they are boring. Ancient Landscapes finds the perfect balance. It is technically flawless yet a pleasure to read. I found myself staying up late, flipping between the beautiful photos, amazing maps and compelling text.I am fascinated by the earth, and my shelves have many geology books. This book is on the top of the pile. This is a book that should be on the shelf of every North American geologist, and I recommend it to anyone heading out on a road trip in western North America. After reading this book, you will probably change your itinerary to see the evidence of these Ancient Landscapes.
Minus one star for quality of the photos and minus another star for the flaws on the exterior. Front cover is scratched with bent edges and has glue that doesn't come off.Book has lots of photos but they have flat color perhaps USA-Today quality photos. Three quarters of the book is photos and diagrams and one quarter is text.Book's text is excellent and accessible to interested amateur. The book is a wonderful, complete catalog of the geological information.
This book is at present the most up-to-date account of our western geologic heritage that I've found. To get the overall development of the present western ( other than the Colorado Plateau) part of the continent in one readable book, many of the details are missing. This book is more like a summary of what humans now know. Now we need a geologist equivalent of Will Durant to write up all the details that this volume summarizes. We read how the North American plate is moving away from the Eurasion Plate but are they not touching in Siberia? Is the N.A. plate twisting at some place. Is the subducted spreading ridge adding to the continental spreading in the basin regions?
