I'm amazed that no one has reviewed this book yet! Less than a penny apiece for some great classic books and stories from various authors, some considered tops in their field! In fairness, maybe it's that people don't usually read straight through a compilation like this, and don't want to review it until they've read every bit. I haven't finished it, but from what I've already read, I can very honestly give it five stars, even if it turned out that the ones I haven't read are awful, which I'm sure they're not. I've enjoyed all the books/stories I've read so far (quite a few), but some particularly stand out (in no particular order):"No Name" by Wilkie Collins. I'd already read his two most famous books (Woman in White and The Moonstone), and this is my favorite so far. Although it's not really a detective story (its official genre is "Sensation Story", not quite the same as sensationalist), I cared so much about the very flawed protagonist that it kept me closer to the very edge of my seat than many thrillers."The Woman in Black" by E.C.Bentley, with a wonderful dedication to G.K. Chesterton, in which Bentley explains why he wrote the book. Just when you think the amateur detective has solved the case, something else comes up! Solved! Oops, no, something else comes up. And then...There are a couple of hilarious takeoffs on Sherlock Holmes stories, whose name I don't remember. Laugh-out-loud funny in parts. And just looking at the authors of the ones I haven't read yet ensures I'll enjoy them. The stories I've read so far by authors previously unknown to me have also been very good.
How can you go wrong for 49 cents? Some of these stories are difficult to read because everything about them is so outdated. Others are a joy to read because they're about a kinder, gentler time when people were courteous to each other, for the most part. Most of the characters in these stories are either lords and ladies of the manor or servants who work for the lords and ladies. In spite of the importance placed on "class", which seems so patently absurd and unfair to us in the modern day, I found the stories mostly very enjoyable. If you like even one of the fifty stories, you'll get your money's worth.
Some great stories and some fair ones. Really worth the money
So many great stories at such a good price that even if you read one or two of them you still couldn't go wrong
excellent value and service
Great for the price.
An avid reader's bargain!
Some stories are really like a bad joke. For example, the story named "In a Grove", would anyone with a right mind call that a story? Masterpiece? what a joke!
