This is one of the better books I got, it teachers a number of techniques in progression from a novice speed reader to more experienced speed reader. This book breaks down speed reading simply and effectively. The information is easily applied. I don't like the chapter about training your eye muscles, felt like the least helpful approach, but didn't think one chapter should reduce the star rating because in the end the book delivers what the reader is looking for.

This is the first book on speed reading that I’ve read that was worth the read. It is full of information and tips on how to increase the speed of my reading. I write a lot but I like to read a lot as well and by using these tips I have noticed a definitive increase in my reading speed. It normally takes me about a week to read through a full length novel and since putting these tips to work, I’ve read 2 novels this week alone.

A good detailed easy to follow guide with plenty of exercises. Some excersises suited me more than the others. I saw the results right away. Great read, straight to the point.

Well written, giving the reader an insight of how we ended up where we are now

A necessary read for scholars of United States history, and a crucial one for anyone interested in the trajectory of American immigration policy.Katherine Benton-Cohen has presented the work of the Dillingham Commission as the basis for conceptualizing immigration to the United States as a problem rather than a question. In analyzing this transition, Benton-Cohen explores long overlooked aspects of the Dillingham Commission. The question of whether or not "Hebrew" was a sufficient racial classification had a large impact on how government officials classified (and later, restricted) immigrant populations. The sheer number of educated women (many with graduate degrees) who worked for the Dillingham Commission reveals an interesting development in federal employment that was at odds with the political freedom of American women. The size and scope of Frank Boas' study for the Dillingham Commission, involving the intrusive measurement of immigrants' bodies, has as much to say about the ways that immigrants were taken advantage of as it does about nativist preoccupations with how the growing numbers of non-Anglo Saxon peoples would affect the constitution of the American populace.Of particular interest is the chapter, "Not a Question of Too Many Immigrants," which focuses on what Benton-Cohen calls "Little-Italy-in-Dixie" (p. 205). In spite of the fact that the Sunnyside Plantation represented concerted efforts by American officials to coerce Italian immigrants into agricultural work, it hardly figured into the Dillingham Commission's "peonage report." This book changed my perspective of American Iranians. The author thinks like an American because she is so spot on in her humor. I laughed the whole time I read her book. Some of the experiences were heartbreaking, but her indomitable spirit shone through. It's sad the the terror acts of a few in the Muslim community have stained the image of patriotic and law abiding American Iranians. All politics aside, if you want to laugh, cry, and experience a roller coaster ride of immigrant assimilation into American society, please read this book.

Laughed out loud reading this while very ill and experiencing many simultaneous crises so it's gotta be funny. The ability to laugh instead of rage is a delightful trait of comedians and Firoozeh Dumas has the humility, the wit, the eye and the vocabulary to paint comedy from life challenges. Her skewed perspective is funny beyond belief. She can simultaneously describe the strange behaviors of her father while obviously loving, admiring, and respecting him. Isn't that the best of family? To see family's quirks as adorable is to forgive in advance and to save the shreds of dignity left to each. In a fraught time to be able to laugh at the divine comedy of refugees experiencing the fish-out-of-water changes is a laudable feat. Her writing skill is superb, her eye is for comedy is raucous, and her self-deprecating humor is empathetic while being sharp. Too funny for words!

Laugh out loud funny in places. Offers a unique insight into a family from an Iranian culture into an American culture. Living as an US expat in a foreign country, I can truly appreciate the challenges of new foods, new slang terms, new ways of behaving in public. Loved their close knit family ties that bound them together and supported them during their "assimilation" into the American lifestyles. Highly recommend this book. Well written, honest, insightful. I felt enlightened by Ms. Dumas' honesty and entertaining writing style, and was, quite honestly, wishing the book hadn't ended.

"Funny in Farsi" is a collection of chronological anecdotes, often very amusing, about the author, her family, and their transition to life in America.Bicycle touring accounts often mention the incredible hospitality of the Iranian people. This book gives an inside view of one extended family. They make Italians look like aloof anorectics. Too many of us equate Iran and the people who live, or come from, there with anti-Americanism and even terrorism. This book is a fun way to learn how wrong that stereotype actually is.Anyway, I enjoyed this light read, and learned a good deal from it. (Did you know that Iranians are to family relationships as Eskimos are to snowflakes? They have like a dozen words for "cousin"!) There are discussion questions at the end of the book, so it could certainly work as a book club selection, as well as an enjoyable personal read.

I found this book after some research for one of my reading challenges. It is wonderful! I am not sure what I expected - it is a memoir of a young Iranian girl, transplanted to the US prior to the revolution, her life and her family's life from then until now as a married mother, a writer. It is really a collection of vignettes of her extended family (which is huge!) and her parents. It is warm and delightful. And VERY funny! I love her sense of humor. And I love the knowledge and the gentle shouldering that she has so wisely imparted in her funny way. I highly recommend reading this

Every American should either read this book or one like it so that they get a really good understanding of what it's like to live in America when you were born in another country. I found two chapters hilariously funny - the one about her Uncle who came to visit and soon found that his clothes didn't fit any longer due to American meal sizing and the one about her Father who likes to "fix" things whether you want him to or not. Thank you, Firoozeh, for sharing your story and not becoming jaded by living through another hateful time (Iranian Revolution) in America.

My beautiful daughter-in-law is Persian, so I was curious about this book. I loved it so much, I bought several other copies, for her, her mother, and even gave a copy to my dentist, who loved it. I learned why my daughter-in-law was so reluctant to allow me to send invitations to people who I knew would not come, but would love to hear about the wedding. I was touched by the relationship that the author had with her father. And, I laughed through much of it.

I never laughed as much as I did while reading this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's writing style and I can't wait to read another of her books! I nearly didn't buy it after reading a reviewer's comment that she felt the author was disrespectful to her parents because of their naivety and heavily accented speech. It didn't seem like that at all to me, I felt the author's warmth and love for her extended family throughout the book. It was a delightful reading experience!

This was a gift for a 94-year-old mother of a friend. The calendar arrived in time to send it out as part of a gift box to the family. She did get it, but sadly died too recently. The establishment did a good job in sending out the calendar, which was of the greatest importance.

An easy read, good for anyone who is curious about Bethel (headquarters of the JWs) life. Having had my heyday as a JW in the 80's I enjoyed the author's experiences (since it was the same time frame). It's not an expose of the JWs (or Bethel) so if you are expecting that you will be disappointed. It is, however, an entertaining, behind-the-scenes look at Bethel life and (I think) most importantly a great example of someone who's been able to move on from The Watchtower successfully. I only wish he hadn't felt the need to pen it under a "fake" name. His rationale for such is a bit weak and is remindful of the paranoia and fear that is common among the JWs.

I know the truth of what Brock Talon writes about. Having been trapped in that "religion" for 40 years, he speaks the truth about this organization and the blow it deals to those who cannot just leave because of the iron rule of New York (Bethel). Looking forward to reading his book that describes his eventual exit. Can't believe it took so long after his Bethel experience that gives the lie to what "paradise" would likely be like. I remember telling my mother one time when I was still a witness in very good standing that I couldn't imagine living on an earth with nothing but JWs. Not paradise,for sure.

I normally avoid books on this subject because they tend to be written by people that strike me as having a remedial level of understanding regarding the beliefs of Jehovah's Witnesses. This author strikes me as being the real thing, a sincere Witness that had his bubble burst at the Big B. I've known others that came back from Bethel or The Farm and I can tell you that they tend to divide into two camps after their experience. They either become self-righteous, or they end up leaving in disgust. I tend to prefer the company of those that leave in disgust.I appreciate this author's position, he holds to his beliefs and doesn't allow a group of men to act upon their assertion that they somehow own bible truth. The Truth is in God's word and is not the province of any man or group of men. Learn that and the absurdity of trying to control others by means of a religious order becomes readily apparent.I'm sure that the author is thought of as apostate by many but he is truly sticking to his faith and convictions which tells me that, by definition, he is not apostate in any reasonable sense of the word. His reasoning on the incongruities of it all ring true; I've come to similar conclusions myself. In more than one case he was writing the very words I have thought myself, especially where he reasons that the common JW conception of the New Order was not something he would prefer over death. Amen!If you have tired of the negativity and the ridiculous levels of control and meddling within the org you might enjoy reading this book.

Good read! Packed with truth and humor. Author gives an honest account of life at Bethel as he saw it. I personally am glad to read an account by someone that was actually living in Bethel and saw all the drama; I always knew that place was not all that. What I read, Bethel is the epitome of a concentration camp. JWs are restricted to a few dollars a month, taking an oath of poverty. Numerous hours are spent at meetings, field service, and personal study, on top of whatever slavery job the Society assigns you to. All of this serves as a recipe of indoctrination for cult mind control.

I've never been a Witness, but after ending my study with them (I discovered a book by a different ex-Witness) I I had to learn all I could. This book tells all and gets into how inhumane the Watchtower can really be. I easily could have read it in one day, but there were other things that I had to get done. If you decide to read it try to pick a day when you don't have anything planned because you won't be able to put it down!

I purchased this book to see if this author was telling the truth or exaggerating about the jw religion. I was a jw and I worked at bethel for a few weeks and everything he says about the jw's and bethel is SO TRUE! The racism, the hypocrisy, the selective sinning, etc....... If you ever was curious about the jw religion and you really want to read the Truth about them, please read this book.

Journey To God's House is a humorous and touching narrative told in the anecdotal style of James Herriot, documenting a young man's "Tour of duty" at the world headquarters of Jehovah's Witnesses. All of us must decide at one point or another if participation in the religion of our parents is a matter of peer pressure or true conviction, so this is in some ways a coming of age story made especially poignant in the author's case because of the extreme negative consequences of that decision. Whether you know anything about Jehovah's Witnesses or not, this book is sure to make you laugh in places and pluck a heart string or two in others.

This was written 15 years ago and it shows. It was difficult to read, as it was so redundant. It should have been a 3 page article in a women’s magazine. Just insulting to my intelligence. Not a fan.

This book was a disappointment. It's simplistic recommendations are the same suggestions that you'd get from you mother or a friend. I thought it trivialized the quandary and pain that constant worry can bring. If you're still interested go to the library and read it. Don't waste your money.

Didn’t finish. Very basic information and outdated

I read this several years ago and it helped me (and a support group I was leading) realize how women tend to ruminate, to our detriment. So I got my 2 nieces a copy this Christmas in the hope that it will help them also.

Learning to live without prejudging everything.

The book had many real case examples that brought us recolations of our friends, family members and very importantly ourselves. The author presents methods to break out of ruminating that are practical and presented concisely.
