1: SUDDEN VICTORY     Even though he was only fourteen years old, Stevie Thomas considered himself a veteran of sports victory celebrations. He had been to the Final Four, the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, and the U.S. Open--in both tennis and golf. He had seen remarkable endings,miracle shots, and improbable last-second heroics.   But he hadn't seen anything quite like this. He was standing just outside the first-base dugout inside Nationals Park, the home stadium for the Washington Nationals, and even though the game had been over for several minutes, the noise was still so loud he couldn't hear anything Susan Carol Anderson was shouting in his ear.   "Mets . . . clubhouse . . . press box . . . ," he managed to make out over the din. Since she was starting to pick her way through the celebrating Nationals and the media swarm surrounding them, he guessed that she had told him that she was going to make her way to the clubhouse of the New York Mets and then meet him back in the press box. She was taking the harder job--talking to the players on a team that had just suffered a shocking defeat. His job was easier: talking to the winners.   The ending of the game had been stunning. With the National League Championship Series tied at three games all, both teams had sent their star pitchers out to pitch game seven: Johan Santana for the Mets, John Lannan for the Nationals. Both had pitched superbly, and the game had gone to the ninth inning tied at 1-1.   Nationals manager Manny Acta brought Joel Hanrahan, his closer, in to pitch the ninth, a bold move in a tie game. And it seemed to have backfired when Carlos Beltran hit a two-out, two-run home run to give the Mets a 3-1 lead. In came the Mets' closer, Francisco (K-Rod) Rodriguez, to get the last three outs needed to give the Mets the pennant.   He got two quick outs, and it wasn't looking good for the Nats when shortstop Cristian Guzman hit a weak ground ball. But somehow Mets all-star shortstop Jose Reyes booted it, allowing Guzman to make it safely to first base. Clearly upset and distracted by the error, Rodriguez then walked Ronnie Belliard, bringing Ryan Zimmerman, the Nationals' best hitter, to the plate.   Guzman began dancing off second base, stretching his lead each time Rodriguez looked back at him. Second baseman Luis Castillo kept flashing toward the bag, as if expecting a pickoff throw from Rodriguez. Sitting in the auxiliary press box, Stevie was wearing headphones that allowed him to hear the Fox telecast.   "Rodriguez and Castillo need to forget about Guzman," he heard Tim McCarver say. "Right now K-Rod has one job, and that's to get Zimmerman out."   "But if the Nats double-steal, the tying runs would both be in scoring position," play-by-play man Joe Buck said.   "True," McCarver said. "But I'm telling you, there is no way Guzman is risking making the last out of the season trying to steal third. He's not that much of a base stealer to begin with."   Rodriguez finally focused on the plate and threw a 97-mph fastball that Zimmerman just watched go by for strike one. Again Guzman danced off second base. This time Rodriguez whirled and did make a pickoff throw as Castillo darted in to take it. Guzmandove back in safely.   "That tells me Guzman has gotten inside K-Rod's head," McCarver said. "You don't risk a pickoff throw in this situation. The only man in the ballpark he should care about right now is Zimmerman."   Rodriguez threw another fastball, and Zimmerman fouled it straight back to the screen.   "That one was ninety-seven too," Buck said. "He doesn't seem too distracted."   "Zimmerman was about two inches from crushing that ball," McCarver said. "You see a batter foul a fastball straight back like that, it means he just missed it."   Rodriguez came to his set position again. Guzman was off the bag once more and Rodriguez stepped off the rubber. Everyone relaxed for a moment.   "Zimmerman has to look for a fastball here, doesn't he?" Buck said.   "Absolutely."   Rodriguez set again, checked Guzman one more time, and threw. Stevie glanced at the spot on the scoreboard that showed pitch speed, and saw 98. Rodriguez had thrown a fastball, and Zimmerman had in fact been looking fastball. This time he didn't miss it. He got it. He got all of it. The ball rose majestically into the air and sailed in the direction of the left-field fence. Mets left fielder Daniel Murphy never moved. The ball sailed way over the fence, deep into the night, and complete bedlam broke out in every corner of the stadium. The Nationals had won the game 4-3 and the series 4-3. Shockingly, they were going to the World Series.

it's ok

If I liked sports, I probably would have enjoyed it more. But it's a fun mystery if you're a middle-school reader who likes baseball.

Another masterpiece from John Feinstein. Purchased for my kids. Difficult to find age appropriate sports books for youth, but this one is right on their level. Both of my kids loved it. Will purchase more of John's book for the kids.

Fabulous book and series for kids who love sports. My 4th grader has read everybook in the series!

Good Story

My 13 year old sports fan has always loved Lupica's books. He has read most of them and we needed something new for him to read. He likes the "mystery" aspect of Feinstein's books.

This book was missing chapters and repeated chapters were in their place

I have taken to reading books that may be appropriate for my grandchildren. My first John Feinstein ---Change up was a great read even for grandma!! I have recommended to my grandsons and have now read several other books by John.

Considering the almost overload of vampire-related media out there, Vassalord is a great take on the genre. The sexual tension between Rayflo and 'Cherry' is wonderful (as is the way they delight in tormenting and teasing each other), the artwork gorgeous, and we're beginning to delve more into Rayflo's past. There's also the developing mystery of how the new 'vampires' are being made and new characters being introduced. The series is more horror (with a good bit of gore) thrown in than straight BL (hence its publishing under TokyoPop), but it's always such a delight to 'read between the lines' with these boys.

I really love this story considering its a shounen ai. The stories development of the characters were nothing like i imagined but better, and with each volume it just keeps getting better.

Vassalord has been a favorite of mine since the first volume. I`m not all that much into Yaoi but this is just awsome. Rayflow is just too damn hot to resist. Yes its vampires but it is vampires done right. When I couldnt buy this at Anime North I went nuts trying to find it. Everywere it was unavailable so I decided to purchase online. My colection is complete. Until the fifth volume comes out that is. Love it.

Vassalord 3 is a massive gore festival of a manga, with some yaoi thrown in. It's confusing as hell, just like the first two volumes, but the hot men and hot blood-sucking scenes make it all worth it. I almost didn't buy this book since it took nearly a year for it come out since the last volume, but I'm really glad I did. This one is going right on my shelf next to my yaoi collection. I can't wait until volume 4 comes out!

Awesome series! I absolutely love these books and was thrilled to find I could buy them cheaper than in the store. It came quickly and was packaged securely and neatly. :D

Samuel Beckett (1906-1989), one of the leading literary and dramatic figures of the twentieth century, was born in Foxrock, Ireland and attended Trinity University in Dublin. After reading the screenplay of Waiting for Godot I did many things. I laughed, I scratched my head, I wondered who this Godot was and I tried to find the elusive plot and meaning of it all. In all, maybe it was Mr. Beckett's primary intention to have all the theater goers go mad! The essence of this two act play revolves around two longtime friends by the names of Vladimir and Estragon who are in search of a character called Godot. The reader or theater goer never really knows who Godot is. Is it the search for God? Could be but who knows. Godot could represent anyone or anything. Beckett gives the impression that Vladimir and Estragon are hobo-like characters who wear bowler's hats and carry on a most nonsensical and repetitious continuing conversation. In fact most of their dialogue is very much like Abbot and Costello's Who's On First. The dialogue goes in circles much like Abbot and Costello. Also another comedy team comes to mind as I read on in what can only be called a farce of a play dominated by absurd allusions. As Vladimir and Estragon continue with their absurd conversations along comes two other characters which add more speculation into what seems to be like the rabbit in Alice In Wonderland added confusion and wonderment in that rather absurd tale. These characters named Pozzo and Lucky add their own comedic scheme to this rather confusing and jumbled tale. When the seemingly intellectually challenged Lucky, who has the IQ of Rocky Balboa, breaks into an outright intellectual diatribe it made me laugh so hard like I remember when I watched old Laurel and Hardy routines as a young boy. The play's meaning and plot is an open book. It can mean anything to anybody. It is full of symbolism and begs for a solid debate. To me it represents life and that life in and of itself at times lacks meaning, shows comedy and can be disappointing and hard to really understand. After seeing this play on February 2, 2014 on Broadway I can compare the play to one TV Series that being "Seinfeld" and the classic movie titled "Groundhog's Day." These are the current comparisons but in the end this play represents a mystery for us to interpret. I'll stick with Groundhog's Day!!! For some reason this play should probably be read and seen multiple times to gain what was in Beckett's mind. I can see why this play is considered a classic. It has all the elements of what the word classic is all about.

"Waiting for Godot" explores Existential philosophy in the form of an absurd, random play. Samuel Beckett uses the easy-to-understand format of two men waiting for their companion Godot to allude to the human condition through Existentialism. The play lacks any true plot (other than the waiting) and there isn't much character development (Vladimir and Estragon wait for Godot despite the fact that he stands them up every day). And while that would seem like a bad thing - all this waiting with zero outcome - isn't that exactly what we spend our whole lives doing? We wait in line, in traffic, for work to end, for a vacation, etc. Stunningly close to our everyday lives, "Waiting for Godot" is a maddening and confusing play that rings true for every reader

First, a word about editions. This edition of WAITING FOR GODOT, though with occasional changes of covers, has long been the standard edition of the play in English. It features Beckett's translation of the play in English, and nothing else. But in more recent copies of the play, Grove has inserted a card noting that in June of 2011 this edition will be replaced by a two one, which will feature the French original alongside Beckett's translation into English. Right now this edition is still available for a fraction of the cost of the new bilingual edition, but at some point soon it will apparently go out of print, and only the new edition of Waiting for Godot - Bilingual: A Bilingual Edition will be available. This new edition will also feature an introduction, which the current edition lacks.Too many people forget that this is a PLAY, i.e., something that provides the words for actors on a stage. It is not primarily intended to be read in a book. Unfortunately, this is how most people experience the play, therefore depriving them of most of elements of the performance. Therefore, I am going to make a recommendation for a way of increasing the richness of your performance of the play.Though an Irishman, Beckett originally wrote the play - as he did with almost all of his works - in French first and then later translated them himself into English (in contrast, Vladimir Nabokov after moving to the United States wrote his books in English, and then translated them into French and Russian, his wife doing the translations into German). The play was originally performed in Paris, while the English-language premiere took place in Ireland. The American debut was not on Broadway, but in Miami, Florida, with Bert Lahr and Tom Ewell.Instead of merely reading the play, read it while listening to a recording of the original Broadway production of Waiting For Godot, which starred Bert Lahr (best known as the Cowardly Lion in THE WIZARD OF OZ) as Estragon and E. G. Marshall as Vladimir. While you still wouldn't get the visual dimension of the play, hearing the actors bring the characters to life adds new layers to the play that you would never get merely by reading it. Lahr was an unexpected choice to star in the play, given that he wasn't an actor so much as a vaudevillian comedian. His acting style was too over-the-top to be convincing in film (though perfect for the Cowardly Lion); I read somewhere - I don't recall where - that he was more like a cartoon character incarnated than a human. He nonetheless gives a marvelous performance here. Marshall was one of the most distinguished stage actors of his generation and more than holds his own with Lahr while acting as more the straight man.If you listen to the recording while reading the book, the performance that will most come to life is that of Lucky. I'd read the play 2 or 3 times over the years and seen it once on the stage in which I now realize was a rather tame production, but had not really paid much attention to Lucky. His main contribution was a single, very long speech (not terribly unlike the long speech given by The Fireman in Ionesco's THE BALD SOPRANO in terms of length and its absurdity - a speech that I gave in a college performance of the play). Read on the page it can seem interesting and silly, but hearing the actor (though it wasn't indicated in the recording, Alvin Epstein played Lucky in the original Broadway production and it is almost certainly him here) perform the speech is revelatory. He doesn't say the words so much as shriek, yelp, gasp, bark, and screech them. Hearing Lucky's speech performed by a talented actor transforms your appreciation of both the speech and the play.This is one of the truly great works of the 20th Century, one of the key plays making up what Martin Esslin dubbed The Theatre of the Absurd, but it is not best experienced by reading it on the page. Try to see it performed instead, or at bare minimum in the Bert Lahr/E. G. Marshall version noted above. You wouldn't think that you had experienced a Bob Dylan song merely by reading the lyrics, and so also you won't experience WAITING FOR GODOT unless you hear or see it performed.

Beckett's "Godot" is probably one of the most amazing and thought-provoking plays out there! Anyone interested in theater simply must read it! It's dark, it's depressing, it's funny, it's thought-provoking, and it belongs to the classics of existentialist theater. It's a phenomenal read, filled with eerie repetition as the two main characters simply cannot stop waiting for the mysterious Godot - and while waiting seems endlessly pointless, they are unable to stop waiting and leave.Yet while I think this is a spectacular play (one of my personal favorites) it's also a highly intellectual one, so do not pick it up if all you want is a light melodrama.

I come to this work as a non-Catholic. I've listened to Timothy Gallagher on YouTube. He has a whole series on the work of St Ignatius. I wish that I had exposure to these rules of spiritual discernment of spirits. It would have made my experience with the Spiritual Path more clear and less flying by the seat of my pants and my heart for grace. Gallagher beings these early yet contemporary teaching on spiritual discernment into contemporary language. But more importantly, he brings to them a clarity of purpose and knowledge of one who is clearly doing his work and staying live to the subject. I especially like the Reader's guide, which I usually dislike in many writings. This has the power to underscore what needs to be underscored and applied as you actually live, not as you want to be seen by the teacher.

Discernment of Spirits is good book for anyone looking to learn about Ignatius' 14 rules on the discernment spirits. Each chapter is dedicated to discussing each rule. First the rule is stated as it was written by Ignatius and then the rule is discussed in a practical sense. Each rule is further illustrated by an example or two to provide a deeper clarity into how the rule can apply to the discerner's life. The only drawback is that this reading this book is similar to reading a manual, which leaves it a little dry and slow at times. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn more about the discernment of spirits. It's worth the price, but you probably won't read it more than once. Rather you may end up using it as a reference source after your first reading.

I would recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!! I wish I had read it many years ago. I am on my second read through it. I hope to read it a 3rd time too!!! it has a fairy high level vocabulary level though... I have had to look up a lot of words to find out what they mean...

Nice to read Ignatius' rules of Spiritual Discernment interpreted for modern language and usage. I had read his Spiritual Exercises, and got lost in the time and distance of language and times. Since so many use his writings for retreats, direction and spiritual direction, it is good for me as a spiritual director and man of prayer to be versed in his methods along with so many of the other masters on the life of prayer in the Christian perspective.

The name of the book "The Discernment of Spirits" is also the name of a seminar given by Father Timothy M. Gallagher, O.M.V. throughout the country. I attended one of these in Boston. I helped organize one in New York after also reading this book. In both, Father Gallagher described how Saint Ignatius of Loyola was able to judge his experiences and tell apart those which he believed originating from "the enemy" and those from the "good spirit." Becoming "aware" of differing experiences, "worldly" and "sacred," both causing delight, both taking a strong "hold on his heart," he came to recognize, little by little, whether these things that moved him were from the "bad spirit" or from "God." So absorbed was he in his thinking, that it took a special moment of grace, where "his eyes were opened a little" and he was able to see and marvel at the difference, where the one experience would leave him "sad" and the other "happy." From his "awareness," he was able to come to an "understanding" of what was happening. From this, he was able learn to "take action," accepting the "sacred" as from God and the "worldly" as from "the enemy." Saint Ignatius was later able to describe the actions of the "bad spirit" as ones that "bite, sadden, and place obstacles, disquieting with false reasons, so that the person may not go forward." On the contrary, he was able to see the movement of God as giving "courage and strength, consolations, tears, inspirations and quiet, easing and taking away all obstacles, so that the person may go forward in doing good." Father Gallagher gives these seminars, and no doubt wrote this book, as "a help" from the teachings of Saint Ignatius, "for everyday living." He said this "applied to persons of every walk of life and vocation." Accordingly, he used examples from the experiences of everyday people. Growing in the "Spiritual Life" can be exhilarating. It can also have its difficulties. If we sincerely attempt to advance spiritually, i.e., to seek union with God, Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R., in his book "Spiritual Passages," insists that spiritual direction (of some kind) is necessary if we are to avoid dangers present in living and advancing in the spiritual life. For instance, he tells us that as we grow in the spiritual life, "we expose more and more of our real being with ... its power and potential for good or ill." Because personal honesty and consistency is necessary on our part, the infused virtues (faith, hope, and charity), and their growth, become extremely important and necessary for our own "inner balance" as we look into our own soul and the hidden unconscious, which may contain very disturbing elements. Using a quote from Archbishop Fénelon, he gives us a look at how our dark side can appear while advancing spiritually:------------------------------------------------------------------ As light increases, we see ourselves to be worse than we thought. We are amazed at our former blindness as we see issuing forth from the depths of our heart a whole swarm of shameful feelings, like filthy reptiles crawling from a hidden cave. We never could have believed that we harbored such things, and we stand aghast as we watch them gradually appear. But we must be neither amazed nor disheartened. We are not worse than we were; on the contrary, we are better. But while our faults diminish, the light by which we see them waxes brighter, and we are filled with horror. Bear in mind, for your own comfort, that we only perceive our malady when the cure begins. So long as there is no sign of cure, we are unconscious of the depth of our disease; we are in a state of blind presumption and hardness; the prey of self-delusion. While we go with the stream, we are unconscious of its rapid course; but when we begin to stem it ever so little, it makes itself felt.------------------------------------------------------------------ We, therefore, need "helps." We need the wisdom of experience--of a mentor--to help us through some of what can be very the confusing aspects of growth. Father Benedict insists that, "when the dark recesses of our spirit become manifest, we especially need at least a friend to share our fears, and assure us that ours is not an uncommon experience." Although a personal Spiritual Director might be the answer here, not everyone has the good fortune of finding and having access to one. There are other ways, however, that this wisdom can be sought, found, and put to use. I believe that Father Gallagher has done a great service to the Church and to those who are striving to practice the Spiritual Life. In this book we come to know the mind of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and how he learned that he could put his own inward experiences to the test to see if they were coming from God or not--to resolve his own perplexities. He taught this to his contemporary followers. He can teach us too. He can be that friend that will assure us that ours is not an uncommon experience. He can speak to us and teach us through this book which Father Gallagher so masterfully put together for us. Bottom line: if we can discern God's action in our lives, we can learn to do God's will!

....and yet another more than great novel by Mary Alice Monroe. At any age this series hits the core of being a women, and teaches us strength, how to endure what life deals us, and how to cope and heal. So much is written into her works as lessons in life, whether in the descriptions of the environment, her uncanny way of making us aware of the importance of preservation of our wildlife, and in our experiences as we all age. My most important contribution to MAM is to make people who have not read her works, make them aware. And that, I have accomplished many times. In BEACH HOUSE FOR RENT, the most poignant part for me, was toward the end when the loggerhead appeared near Lovie's dune, a simply amazing view of life. I will keep that lesson with me for a very long time. In conclusion, the story is wonderful, the lessons important and beautiful. Once again, Mary Alice Monroe, thank you!!!

Once again, this book delivers a powerful message about women at their most vulnerable who embrace their strength and resilience, and claim the life they were meant to live. The unique setting at the shores of an island immersed in turtles, birds, and dolphins only enhances the power and beauty of this story. Finally the triumph of love above all is simply beautiful. This is my new favorite summer book! IMary Alice Monroe's books teach us about marine conservation through complex and interesting characters set on the southern coast. Once you open her books you are in for a treat. This series, as well as the summer girls series, takes you into the world of multifaceted, strong, likeable women who encounter life problems and set about meeting the challenges with grace. The characters will stay with you long after you finish the book. The best part is that my grown daughter who is an environmental scientist and I can share these stories and enjoy conversing about the happenings in their lives-and the very real challenges that exist for marine life and these characters. My advice: Grab the book, snuggle up in a comfortable spot and let the waves roll in and out as you spend some time at Primrose Cottage. You will not be disappointed. Happy reading and happy summer!

Oh how I've missed you, these characters of mine. I really feel as tho these characters are friends and family. "Beach House for Rent" is book #4 in a lowcountry series that is rich with characters, scenery, relationships, heartache and love. This ongoing saga is great for laying back with a tall glass of tea and allowing the story to envelop you. If you are not on the beach, these books will definitely transport you there.

The Beach House series is my favorite Mary Alice Monroe book series. Just when I think she can't get any better, she delivers yet another wonderful book. Beach House for Rent was a fast and highly entertaining read. Her heartwarming characters take the readers on a journey as they plod through life trying to make sense of why things happen. Mary Alice Monroe is an amazing storyteller. She weaves the fragility of our endangered sea animals and the environment throughout this book series making the books not only entertaining, but also informative. I'm ready for the next book in the series!

Mary Alice Monroe is my favorite writer and this book did not disappoint. From her first few lines, I felt myself transported to a place I would love to be with people I would love to know. One of my favorite things the author does is teach the reader something about nature. While continuing the story of Lovie and the sea turtle team, she introduces shore birds and broadens our knowledge of nature once again. I've read all her books and eagerly await the next.

I was Blown away at yet another Brilliant book and with a twist that I did not expect. This book, while sad in parts, was also a Wonderful way to see how the Human Strength, Growth and Perserverence can help us work through personal struggles. The awareness about anxieties I feel are an added bonus to her Heartfelt stories . I Highly recommend this book and All Mary Alice Monroe books, you will fall in love with her new characters, almost feel the ocean breeze, smile at the familiarity of the beach house, the Turtles, the ecological insight and Celebrate the Residents we love .Im Hopeful and Excited for another book in this series.
