Somewhere Towards the End: A Memoir, by Diana Athill

Review

“Athill writes…with clarity, calm, and common sense.” - Barbara Fisher, Boston Globe“Life, not death, is her preoccupation…Reflections on old age, rather than on a long life lived are rare…It is rarer still for a woman to write such a book: so Athill’s candor and economic prose on religion, regrets, and sex are invigorating.” - Emma Jacobs, Financial Times“Jean Rhys said that literature was a lake, and what mattered was to contribute to it, even if only a trickle. She contributed a narrow boiling river. Diana Athill has contributed a cool clear burn.” - Carole Angier, Literary Review“A great gift. . . . This is a warm, inspiring book.” - Susan Salter Reynolds, Los Angeles Times“Bracingly frank…joyful rather than grim… she offers clear-eyed wisdom of the grandma-you-wish-you’d-had variety.” - People“To paraphrase Shakespeare, wisdom is bred in neither the heart nor the head, but in the bones that carry us through the decades. A few very talented artists, like Diana Athill, may persuade their old bones to yield up a glimpse or two of what they’ve learned.” - Laura Miller, Salon“There is something terrifically comforting about a nonagenarian writing with clarity, wit and verve about getting old and facing death. . . . [Athill] evokes another grande dame of British letters in her uninhibited lifestyle and no-holds-barred, clarion voice: last year’s Nobel Prize winner, Doris Lessing.” - N. Heller McAlpin, San Francisco Chronicle“Welcome and original.” - Dwight Garner, The New York Times“She writes as a person of wide-ranging learning, a generalist, a lover of men and animals and a garden enthusiast, a person intoxicated with life.” - Erica Jong, The New York Times Book Review“A spry dispatch on the condition of being elderly.” - The New Yorker

A very well written work, part memoir, part description of her current life in old age. Satisfies the curiosity in some of us Boomers about what it is like to be in late old age.She is an interesting person, being very unlike most women- many lovers, never married or had children, and (almost) never missing those things. Nevertheless ended up in a wife-like caring role for her companion of over forty years (but lover for only eight), and her reasons for taking on that role willingly illuminate the essentials of strong human bonds.I couldn't put the book down. Excellent.

A terrifically talented British publishing professional looks at life as she is living it in her 80s, and moves from subject to subject with great honesty, almost no sentimentality and absolutely no "humble bragging.". She's forthcoming and clear about her past loves, unflinching about her future and what age takes away, and manages to be uplifting and reassuring about life without dispensing easy advice. She lights the reader's way into their own advanced maturity by simply telling her particular life and being an individual of perception. So this collection of essays is a rarity. Athill has published more since, so her look here at one's prospects for one's dwindling days is happily not "the end" of her reflections.

Near the end of her life, Diana Athill has written an entertaining and thoughtful record of living and of the experience of growing older. The physical incapacities that every human being faces, the change in focus after retirement, and the refreshing feeling of "letting go" of many things that occupied her in earlier years. Her frankness about both her lack of faith and lack of desire for children, her fears about having a "nub" of selfishness deep inside her, and her delight in becoming an author so much later in life that it didn't turn her head but proved to be a delight are views that we aren't often privy to.

What is it like to grow old? Locked as we are into our ghettos of age, we seldom come into close contact with the elderly, and few of the are as articulate as Diana Athill. She shows how growing old can be a challenge and a reward in itself. Scrupulously honest about her past life as an active woman, a loving partner, and an outstanding editor and writer, she is equally as honest about her present weakness and sense of loss. Still writing at age 101, she has am attitude of 'enjoy yourself as much as you can without doing any damage to other people.'A rare treasure of a book and a writer.

An honest book. There are those who have reviewed this book and indicated that this is a self involved individual. What these reviews are doing is judging this person for the type of lifestyle she has chosen. She is honest and does not hold back and she has certainly done her share of self examination. I am not quite as old as she is...but I am getting there. And I have to say that her take on life and its ending time resonated with me.

For the life of me, I can't understand why this book won an award. I, too, am "somewhere towards the end," although not quite as far as Athill [of course, one never knows]. To me, this is a very ordinary account of the thoughts and experiences of an older woman, some of them mildly interesting. I suppose the anal retentive part of my personality led me to finish it, but certainly not the pleasure-seeking one.

Frank and honest documentary of a successful and intelligent woman looking back over her life and ahead(if there is any ahead). In my 80's now, I found her memoir interesting and intriguing.

I really enjoyed this book. Though my life has been somewhat different than hers she touches on so many of the things we all have to think about and deal with "somewhere towards the end" that it felt like a good talk with an old friend.

The second book in the Guardians trilogy finds our group of six in Capri searching for the second falling star. The one concentrates of the romance between Sawyer and Annika. This is a romance that seemingly has a built-in ending date. Annika is a mermaid who was given legs so that she could take part in the quest to find the stars but will return to the sea in three months without them. Sawyer has a device that lets him travel in space and time.Sawyer is reluctant to begin a relationship with Annika for a number of reasons. The primary one for him is that Annika is new to life on land and dealing with humans. He sees her as an innocent in need of protection. Despite her lack of familiarity with humans, Annika is a woman who knows what she wants.Our villain, the dark goddess Nerezza, has found herself a human partner in Andre Malmon who is a bored killer who has had previous run-ins with Sawyer and with Riley. If he weren't so irredeemably evil, I could feel sorry for him because his relationship with Nerezza changes him for the worse. But Malmon makes his bargain eagerly and ends up changed and enslaved to her.Since one of the main viewpoint characters in this one isn't human, we get a lot of Annika's joy and curiosity. We also get a lot of opportunities to see her struggling with idioms and customs of humans. For example, she has a very different way of dealing with nakedness and talking about sex. Luckily, her new sisters Riley and Sasha are there to clear up some of her confusion.Again, this story is trademark Roberts in the relationships she builds between the characters and their acceptance of each others strengths and weaknesses. Friendships matter in a Roberts book. I can't wait to read the next one both to see the end to their quest and to see the relationship that is coming next.

~~~ No Spoilers in my reviews ~~~Note to readers... If you're new to the Guardians Trilogy, I highly recommend reading Stars of Fortune (Book One, the Guardians Trilogy) first. Book One truly sets everything up and improves the pleasure of reading Bay of Sighs. I guarantee that any reader beginning with Book Two will not only wish that they had read the books in order, they will also turn to immediately begin reading Stars of Fortune.We have another great new original publication by Nora Roberts in the Guardians Trilogy! Bay of Sighs, book two in the aforementioned trilogy, continues where Stars of Fortune (book 1) left off. The guardians are still pursuing the stars - one per book - while the relationships between the six continue to develop. As any Nora Roberts reader recognizes and I believe now expects, 3 women and 3 men featured in a trilogy allows one of the greatest pleasures of Ms. Roberts readers, her incredible talent for the perfect mix of developing romances, focusing heavily on one romantic couple per book, as well as fleshing out the deepening interpersonal relationships between the six.As the general plot was laid out in book 1, there was more availability in this book for the other characters' details and motivations. Of course there is no shortage of action and suspense either, both written as well as romance by Ms. Roberts.Seriously, is there anything she isn't able to write excellently???- I read an average of 5 books per week and there are very few books I ever read twice. I almost always find at minimum 3-5 proofreading errors and I don't recall the last time I caught any errors in new NR publications. I read most genres and have had these reading habits since I was a child. The ratio of books I'd look forward to re-reading versus the number of books in my personal library is minuscule. I have quite a few more Nora Roberts/ JD Robb (NR books actually) that I am able to truly enjoy reading again than any other authors.The greatest compliments I am personally able to give any author are actually wanting to read the book(s) again as well as missing the characters and "wondering" what they're up to as well as where their paths lead to in the future. I wholeheartedly extend these compliments to Ms. Roberts and thank her for diligently writing with such talent for all of her readers. My only wish is that she would revisit some of her previous series and pen new novels with the characters lives present day. We can only hope that maybe one day she'll do so.My only complaint (really more of an observation) is that going into any trilogy / series readers generally assume that the events in the second book / next to final edition will all work out and line up as a bridge to connect the final book. However, as part of her own special magic, Ms. Roberts masterfully keeps her readers glued straight through to the final page of Bay of Sighs.Ms. Roberts, thank you for a fantastic Saturday afternoon with Sasha, Annika, Riley, Bran, Doyle and Sawyer!I'll be missing them until I finish the trilogy...
I am a huge fan of Nora Roberts, especially her trilogies. However, this one is just plain awful. Same old story, same old characters, and same old formula for plot and character development that has been used way too much in her books lately. The first book was OK. I was hoping for better with the second book but I was sorely disappointed. I will read the third book just because I am OCD that way and have to finish the series. Maybe it will be better. Not holding my breath though.
I don't know for sure but I suspect that most adults struggle with anxiety to some extent. There are a lot of potential things to be stressed about in this world - some which can easily be dismissed logically, but many that are genuine concerns that probably will happen. Since this is a universal problem there are many Christian books out there on how to combat anxiety. When amazon vine offered me a book by Max Lucado I was happy to take it. I could use some help in this area of my life. I've read a few by this author. I know he has a solid, Biblical worldview.I expected this to be an encouraging, somewhat lightweight, book that I could enjoy for a few hours, take a little bit out of, and pass along for someone else to enjoy. My first impression of the book did not sway me from this view. The main section is only about 150 pages long, with a good amount of pages blank (between chapters) or devoted to a single large quote. I hate that sort of thing in a book but, oh well, I didn't pay for this anyway.To my slight surprise, despite the blank or 3/4 empty pages, this is a substantial treatment on the subject. Yes, it is encouraging, full of anecdotes and easy to read but it contains practical steps on combatting anxiety. Based on Philippians 4: 4-8 the author patiently dissects a very powerful passage of scripture and shows you exactly what you need to do to derive maximum benefit from these verses.I normally don't think much one way or the other when it comes to the use of acronyms when it comes to teaching (I can't remember a single one to be honest) but Max uses the acronym CALM as a teaching tool to show how to apply these verses.C - Celebrate God's Goodness - "Rejoice in the Lord Always"A - Ask God For Help - "Let your requests be made known to God"L - Leave Your Concerns With Him - "With Thanksgiving"M - Meditate On Good Things - "Think about the things that are good and worthy of praise"He breaks down each verse into understandable concepts that work in real life. I believe I will actually use this acronym to remind myself of the principles here. This is not a heavy theological book. These are simple real-life-applicable instructions for anyone who is willing to apply it. Medicine for a universal ailment. If you take the medicine you will see results. If you acknowledge the truth of the medicine but don't take it you will not see results. If you take a lower dosage, less often you will see lesser results. Surprisingly I have underlined many of the passages in this book that I plan to read over and over. I hope to get this type of thinking into my daily life until it becomes unconscious. Very much like the Gospel, this book will be of great benefit to anyone who simply receives it.Some personal thoughts before I go:One particular passage moved me greatly: "The benefit of being a great sinner is dependence upon a great grace. I found a forgiveness that is too deep to be plumbed, too high to be summited. I have never been more or less saved than the moment I was first saved. Not one bad deed has deducted from my salvation. No good deed, if there are any, has enhanced it. My salvation has nothing to do with my work and everything to do with the finished work of Christ on the cross."This is absolute truth. If you are a believer you should know one thing: God will never be angry with you again. He swore that in Isaiah 54, which comes after you believe in what happened in Isaiah 53. God has a Covenant of Peace with you that will never, ever be removed. When we get that deep down in our souls most of our anxiety will effortlessly evaporate.
This book is wonderful.The title "Anxious For Nothing" isn't a gentle scold on being anxious for no reason. The book acknowledges that there are many things in life that cause us anxiety. Rather, the book is about trusting God in such a way that gives Him control over our anxieties and leaves us exactly that...anxious for nothing. "Because the Lord is near, we can be anxious for nothing."This is my first Max Lucado book, so I was a bit surprised at its actual brevity; only 152 pages of narrative (with every couple pages filled with just a single sentence) with a remaining 70 pages of reflection questions and Bible verses. This is fine, especially if the book is read as part of a study, but I admit I did feel a bit cheated.That being said, I very much enjoyed the counsel of Max Lucado and how it was supported with Scripture in context. (It seems so many Christian writers take Scripture out of context these days.) I found myself jotting down little bits in a notebook and adding a few nuggets to the margins of my Bible. This is by far the best book I have read in terms of a Biblical approach to anxiety that makes sense and is Scripture-based.
When I see the name MAX LUCADO my interest is captured. When I ran across ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING: FINDING CALM IN A CHAOTIC WORLD, I ordered it immediately. I have run across many in my life that struggle with anxiety. I think if we were honest, most of us do in one form or another, at different times in our lives.ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING goes beyond what the title may first bring to mind. Anxious comes in many levels. We all have feared, worried, wanted to know what is going to happen ahead of time. Wondered if we are making the right decision, if the decision we make is the right one.ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING gives practical and Biblical ways to reduce fear, anxiety and uncertainty. I am three fourths of the way through the book, and so excited about what it contains I had to stop and write a review. Whether you believe you have a large or small issue with anxiety, or perhaps know of someone that does, ANXIOUS FOR NOTHING will be a benefit to your life. A must read by all, and one you will wish you had the funds to purchase a book for everyone in your life.
"Anxious For Nothing" is yet another great Max Lucado title. This one, as the title mentions, focuses on anxiety. Around 160 pages, the book is a quick read and addresses such topics as:1. Realizing the Lord is in control, regardless our situation.2. The importance of abiding in Jesus during our trial.3. The importance of prayer during our struggle.4. You have the power to choose on what to think about, good or bad.5. Learn to be grateful during your struggle - surely there is something good that can come out of it.6. Realized how merciful and loving God is to us, regardless our circumstances.7. Fret less and believe in Jesus more.A great read for anyone going through a struggle and in need of hope. You should be able to complete title in a few sittings and come away with more encouragement and hope that is found only in Jesus.
Have desperately wanted this book since it was fictionally depicted in the original sex in the city movie. It has not disappointed. Actually made me miss English classes from college and high school so I can analyze the letters further with peers
I use these letters to write to my boyfriend on days when I feel extra romantic. I mail it to him
I'm a big reader, but couldn't get through this book for someone reason. Some of the letters were cool, but most of the book was not what I expected and it's just sitting as a paperweight on my shelf now.I thought I'd try getting the other volumes, but after reading this one -- I'm going to pass on spending my money on them.
I had to get it after seeing it on Sex in the City
After watching a chick flick that referenced this book I couldn't help but want to purchase it. Amazon is super easy to search products and I was lucky enough to get a book that made me wish I had a man. lol. Non the less, i'm glad I purchased the book.
Absolutely great book. I was watching sex and the city and it showed this book and intrigued me to read it. (These men are so dramatic) it’s great.
The letters are nice but 25 pages in there are already too many typos to count. Almost every letter has one and it just ruins the whole letter when a stupid one is made
I love this book. I think all hopeless romantics should buy it. Beautiful writing and a quick read.
Absolutely an amazing book! But be prepared it is not for the faint of heart. It is devastatingly clear account of reality or rather the lack of it.
Jean Baudrillard (1929-2007) was a French philosopher, cultural theorist, political commentator, and photographer most associated with the “Postmodern” movement.He wrote in the introductory section of this 1996 book, “This is the story of a crime---of the murder of reality. And the extermination of an illusion---the vital illusion, the radical illusion of the world. The real does not disappear into illusion; it is illusion that disappears into integral reality. If the crime were perfect, this book would have to be perfect too, since it claims to be the reconstruction of the crime. Alas, the crime is never perfect. Moreover, in this grim record of the disappearance of the real, it has not been possible to pin down either the motives of the perpetrators, and the corpse of the real itself has never been found. And the idea that underlies this book has never been pinned down either. That idea was the murder weapon.”He states in the first chapter, “The great philosophical question used to be ‘Why is there something rather than nothing?’ Today, the real question is, ‘Why is there nothing rather than something?’ The absence of things from themselves, the fact that they do not take placed though they appear to do so, the fact that everything withdraws behind its own appearance and is, therefore, never identical with itself, is the material illusion of the world. And, deep down, this remains the great riddle, the enigma which wills us with dread and from which we protect ourselves with the formal illusion of truth.” (Pg. 2)He continues, “Not to be sensitive to this degree of unreality and play, this degree of malice and ironic wit on the part of language and the world is, in effect, to be incapable of living. Intelligence is precisely this sensing of the universal illusion, even in amorous passion---though without the natural course of that passion being impaired. There is something stronger than passion: illusion. There is something stronger than sex happiness: the passion for illusion.” (Pg. 8)He concludes a chapter, “This is what is at stake in Virtuality… If it were brought to completion, that radical effectuation would be the equivalent of a perfect crime… future extermination… would leave no trace. We would not even have time to disappear. We would be disintegrated in Real Time and Virtual Reality long before the stars went out. Fortunately, all this is literally impossible. Very High Definition, with it ambition of producing images, sounds, information, bodies in microvision, in stereoscopy, as you have never seen them before… is unrealizable. As is the phantasy of Artificial Intelligence: the brain’s becoming a world, the world’s becoming a brain, so as to function without bodies, unfailing, autonomized, inhuman. Too intelligent, too super-efficient to be true. There is, in fact, no room for both natural and artificial intelligence. There is no room for both the world and its double.” (Pg. 34)He observes, “all of the advanced technological process points up the fact that behind his doubles and his prostheses, his biological clones and his virtual images, man takes advantage of these things to disappear. So it is with the answer-phone: ‘We aren’t here. Leave a message…’ And the video plugged into the TV takes over the job of watching the film for you… you always feel a little responsible for the films you haven’t seen, the desires you haven’t fulfilled, the people you haven’t replied to, the crimes you haven’t committed, the money you haven’t spent. This amounts to a whole array of repressed possibilities, and the idea that there is a machine to store them and filter them, into which they go to die away quietly, in a profoundly reassuring tone.” (Pg. 40)He notes, “The info-technological threat is the threat of an eradication of the night, of that precious difference between night and day, by a total illumination of all moments. In the past, messages faded on a planetary scale, faded with distance. Today we are threatened with lethal sunstroke, with a blinding profusion, by the ceaseless feedback of all information to all points of the globe.” (Pg. 52-53)Not one of Baudrillard’s “major works,” this book still is filled with many of Baudrillard’s perceptive and sometimes acerbic comments on society.
I am sitting all day and reading "the perfect crime". at first it was fun - he has a sense of humor - the writing is brilliant.but after 6 hours of reading I ask myself - did I learn something new? nothing."consumer society" is a cliché. repeating all the time "reality does not exist" makes him sound clever and original- but it is just word play. besides - how can he be serious and publish about 20 books in his lifetime.the main effort was probably making up provocative titles.
I'm amazed that no one has reviewed this book yet! Less than a penny apiece for some great classic books and stories from various authors, some considered tops in their field! In fairness, maybe it's that people don't usually read straight through a compilation like this, and don't want to review it until they've read every bit. I haven't finished it, but from what I've already read, I can very honestly give it five stars, even if it turned out that the ones I haven't read are awful, which I'm sure they're not. I've enjoyed all the books/stories I've read so far (quite a few), but some particularly stand out (in no particular order):"No Name" by Wilkie Collins. I'd already read his two most famous books (Woman in White and The Moonstone), and this is my favorite so far. Although it's not really a detective story (its official genre is "Sensation Story", not quite the same as sensationalist), I cared so much about the very flawed protagonist that it kept me closer to the very edge of my seat than many thrillers."The Woman in Black" by E.C.Bentley, with a wonderful dedication to G.K. Chesterton, in which Bentley explains why he wrote the book. Just when you think the amateur detective has solved the case, something else comes up! Solved! Oops, no, something else comes up. And then...There are a couple of hilarious takeoffs on Sherlock Holmes stories, whose name I don't remember. Laugh-out-loud funny in parts.And just looking at the authors of the ones I haven't read yet ensures I'll enjoy them. The stories I've read so far by authors previously unknown to me have also been very good.
How can you go wrong for 49 cents? Some of these stories are difficult to read because everything about them is so outdated. Others are a joy to read because they're about a kinder, gentler time when people were courteous to each other, for the most part. Most of the characters in these stories are either lords and ladies of the manor or servants who work for the lords and ladies. In spite of the importance placed on "class", which seems so patently absurd and unfair to us in the modern day, I found the stories mostly very enjoyable. If you like even one of the fifty stories, you'll get your money's worth.
Some great stories and some fair ones. Really worth the money
So many great stories at such a good price that even if you read one or two of them you still couldn't go wrong
excellent value and service
Great for the price.
An avid reader's bargain!
Some stories are really like a bad joke. For example, the story named "In a Grove", would anyone with a right mind call that a story? Masterpiece? what a joke!
