Where does life begin? How does life evolve? When does life begin again? These are questions that children and adults seek answers to. In Pumpkin Circle by George Levenson and Shmuel Thaler, the circle of life is showcased through vividly detailed photos that are punctuated by the well-chosen words that dance across the pages. The book begins with a cascade of pumpkins tumbling across a two page spread. The stage has now been set. Immediately following this introduction, Levenson and Thaler lead the reader on a guided tour of a pumpkin patch that progresses from the long lazy days of summer to the crisp and fleeting days of fall. Leaves grow. Blossoms bloom. Pumpkins swell. Vines fade. Pumpkins are harvested. Yet, that is not the end of the story. Whether you are a curious child or an inquisitive adult, read this story to discover how the circle of life begins again. As an added bonus, Levenson’s and Shmuel’s photographs cleverly obscure the identity of the pumpkin farmer. By doing so, the reader is invited to place himself in the role of the gardener. So, go ahead— carve into that freshly harvested pumpkin. But don’t forget to save some of the seeds to start your own Pumpkin Circle next spring.THE DETAILS:Word count: 459 (excluding fact page at the end of the story)Average words per page: 12Extra value: breathtaking photography, rich vocabulary, fun subject material.

This is a great manga romance with a good story, lots of drama and lovely artwork.I did think that Cass and Dray gave up on their relationship too easily the first time round but this enhanced the drama of their relationship when they met the second time. I also liked the fact that Cass was an independent, professional, hard working woman and yet she also had a vulnerable side too. The story translates well into manga and the artwork enhanced the story and really brought it to life. This is definitely one of my favourite manga romances.Copy privided by Harlequin via Netgalley in exchange for an unbiased review.

The way I use these planners is to create as much as possible the "world"of my story. I draw and paint my characters. (if you don't draw, cut out picturesthat remind you of your characters) I add pictures of settings, color schemesthat I like and dialogue and inspirational quotes that remind me of thestory. Anything you can add that reminds you of this "world"you have created helps. Then when you open it up to work on it, it ismuch easier to get right back into the mindset of that setting and thosecharacters and get straight to work.Â

On Sunday, I typed "digestion" into Amazon's search engine and Dr. Suhas's book popped up in first place. When I saw it was being released on Tuesday, I took that as a sign and pre-ordered his book. Receiving it Tuesday afternoon (gotta love Amazon Prime!), I devoured it by Friday morning. Tomorrow, Saturday, I will start the Doctor's protocol and report back with my results. The Hot Belly Diet is full of great Ayurvedic advice as well as blending Western medical thoughts into it so it it very easy to understand, has a very loving, friendly voice and the recipes look so yummy that I am going to try four of them out on friends this Thursday! I also checked out his website dedicated to the book and I do hope he begins a blog where he or an assistant will answer questions. So far, my only question would be the fruit issue. On page 125, Dr. Suhas says to "avoid fresh, whole fruit as a dessert after meals, as the energy of fruits should not be exposed to hot, digestive acids". But on several other pages, including page 120, there are instructions that say a piece of whole fruit can be eaten for dessert. Plus, several of the recipes have fruit in them with other non-fruit ingredients. The recipes do ALL sound delicious!Other than that small point, everything else makes perfect sense and the whole book, as a read, is very calming. I haven't weighed myself but I actually look and feel lighter from just having read it. Much of the book is about our mental and emotional life and how that affects our digestions and I think I am seeing how this is true. Thank you, Dr. Suhas and Kristin for writing such a wise and pleasant book!8/31/14: Yesterday I did the optional castor oil cleanse. Did not taste as yucky as I thought it might (I stirred into a fresh squeezed grapefruit juice). Felt tired and nauseous all day but stayed around house like suggested. Began drinking daily seed/ginger/lemon brew blend but without caffeine green tea since I have a problem with caffeine. Odd but tasty. Had a green smoothie, a protein smoothie and a broth with blended carrots and celery in it, so managed to stick to liquid fast: which is amazing for me! Was not difficult. What did bum me out was that I didn't make a #2 visit to the bathroom by 2:00pm. Nothing happened until 7 am the next morning. So my digestion must be REALLY slow. No wonder I have had so many digestive issues in the past. Good news is that in one day I lost 2 lbs and a half inch each off my waist and hips. And I feel great today! Just started taking the two tri supps. (Got them from Amazon.) Will update after 21 day protocol. Can't wait to try the khichadi!9/14/14: So I haven't finished the entire 21 day protocol but I wanted to update with some more results that might help someone else. It took me longer than three days to transition into phase two. It took about a week. Probably because my digestion was so weak. Things weren't coming out, if you know what I mean, my guts were bloated, I was only able to swallow two cups of seed tea a day and I almost quit. Oh, here's a bizarre thing that happened at about day four: the skin on my knuckles, knees and elbows got really dry, brown and flaky! But my joints were feeling better and I had more energy. Also, I think I thought because I had promised to give my 21 day report, I would keep on with it. Five days later, all the gnarly skin had sloughed off and left nice soft skin (which they were soft before I started the diet). And I can now crouch down, let's say to get something out of a lower cabinet or weed in the garden, without any pain or weakness. In the last four days, I was able to start eating lighter dinners, quit snacking and drink the full quart of seed tea during the day. After a cup of seed tea, my body will heat up briefly, I will even start sweating and then it will subside. (No, it's not a hot flash: I know what those are ;-)) In the last three days, my digestion has started to remain calm for almost the whole day, sometimes the whole day. I'm thrilled! I have lost another half inch off my waist and another whole inch off my hips. My clothes are feeling a lot looser. I feel so much more energetic and vibrant. Two strangers, one at the post office and one at Trader Joe's stopped me yesterday and said, "Wow, you look healthy!" Isn't that weird? (But nice!) I feel like my digestion is beginning to work consistently for the first time in years. And did I tell you how delish the khichadi is? For the most part, (I have dined out at restaurants occasionally for lunch or dinner) I eat it for lunch with salad or veg, finishing with some dark chocolate (hemp seed smoothie for B, veg soup or grilled veg salad for D, chia seed pudding for dessert) and I have used several different seasonings, along with onions and veg broth besides just the curry. Both my son and husband eat it! It's so satisfying. To say the least, I am very satisfied with Dr. Suhas's plan :-) I'm feeling such joy, relief, and I'm getting my life back!9/25/14: 21 day update: Yay, I'm wearing my skinny jeans today! (I was living in all my elastic waist pants and skirts.) But, really, besides fitting back into my clothes, Dr. Suhas's program has relieved my digestion issues by 85% and it keeps getting better every week. I no longer take the digestive enzymes I had been taking for years. And I no longer crave cookies like Cookie Monster! That was an ongoing problem of mine for, oh, let's say, 30 years. And I finally have energy to get lots of work and play done every day. I'm looking forward to trying out more of the recipes in this book. It was a massive stroke of luck that I stumbled onto The Hot Belly Diet. Life changer for me!

This book is really informative if you want to learn about Ayurveda and it's health benefits. I enjoyed the recipes in the back- first time trying a Kabocha squash and it was delicious!I've attempted to do the 30 day cleanse. I went into the diet with full commitment and motivation. I made it a full week excluding the day of fasting/castor oil cleanse (doesn't taste as bad as you'd think!) I am feeling lighter and healthier, however I am feeling so tired and fatigued all day, even with having a little caffeine with the daily green tea drink. I am too used to drinking coffee. The meal plans in Phase 2 are good at first, but after a few days I am really tired of having khichadi every day- it's just not feasible even despite changing up the nuts, seeds, cleansing vegetables. This diet is very challenging if you are working full time, but if you are able to get up earlier to prepare your breakfast, lunch, and tea drink, then that works. Just put the khichadi in a thermos like he suggests in the book and it stays warm for at least 5 hours. I've tried to change it up by switching out khichadi for lunch and doing a salad/tofu or egg, but even that, it gets boring fast!I don't think I have the wil power in me to do the full 30 days, but I am glad I learned some new recipes and lifestyle habits to start incorporating into my daily healthy living.

I have been consulting Dr. Suhas for many years as have members of my family. Dr. Suhas is a brilliant Ayurvedic physician who has deep knowledge of his subject and has helped me deal with health issues on an ongoing basis (I am an overall healthy and extremely active 72 year young woman). He was, and remains, an invaluable source of wisdom to my daughter who has dealt with traumatic loss. I am always surprised when educated friends look at me quizzically when I talk about Ayurveda. I would never rely on Western medicine exclusively - though useful and necessary at times - and always ask Dr. Suhas for medical advice when needed.Dr. Suhas also developed an Ayurvedic calendar specific for me. It is extremely useful in determining certain periods that may be "difficult" as well as optimal times during the calendar phase - year in and out. Not only is Dr. Suhas a wise and compassionate person, he is always available for a consultation, notwithstanding the demands placed upon him.I am fortunate to have been able to see Dr. Suhas on many occasions in person and have participated in his lectures when he visited the East Coast. Read the book and deepen your knowledge of this vitally important subject!Thank you Dr. Suhas for your continued support and deep understanding of our journey on the planet. With fond regards, also from my family, Namaste. Dheri dheri Dhanyabhat - Ama & Chori.Charlotte Bensdorp Wilson

Reading this now after having watched the movie. Uncanny the similarities. This could be me and MY sister. My sister, also a forceps baby born to a heavily drugged mother, born the year before me (1959)...mentally handicapped (NOT Downs Syndrome, which in many ways would have been easier). There but by the grace of God go I. She basically cleared a birth path for me (I just fell out, 1 month early). I try to remember this during the difficult times, she made way for me, and suffered the consequences. She is my hero. It is nice to find someone (Rachel) who truly understands. I also heard all my childhood "You have to take care of Mary..." frightening stuff for a kid just trying to figure out how to take care of herself. We did not have other brothers and sisters, it was all on me. But Mary, like Beth, is doing well on her own, and I am here to help when needed. Love.

This book has been particularly poignant for me... my brother is affected. What I appreciate most about this book is Rachel Simon's exquisite detail and ability to " say it like it is!" In writing this book, she has addressed a long (purposely, often) ignored topic and segment of society. While things are much improved over the last 60+ years, appropriate diagnoses and treatments of mentally "challenged" have been painfully slow and continues to be a severe hardship for the patient and their loved ones. And I am so happy that someone has addressed this and so clearly and effectively. This needs to be on every high school's reading list. Thank you so much, Rachel Simon!Bravo!

The author has a sister, close in age, who has developmental disabilities. What used to be described as mental retardation. It was until both were in their late 30s and she committed to spend a year riding the buses in her sister’s city that Rachel (author) finally came to understand Beth, her sister: Beth’s reality, her limitations but also what Beth is capable of. With flashback descriptions of the family they grew up in, parents who were far from perfect but were determined that Beth would not be institutionalized, happy memories of their relationship but many frustrations too, Rachel takes us on a journey where we can understand better the major shift that has taken place in how people with developmental/intellectual disabilities (DD/ID) are treated in American society.Beth lives on her own with support from her case management team. In terms of support, Beth has had a fantastic case management team and, through her obsession with riding the public buses in her city, has amazing support in an unusual sector—bus drivers. Rachel describes the group of drivers that befriend Beth, support her in ways that were heartwarming and surprising. Rachel makes the point that people who have DD/ID need that kind of support in order to be able to function in society but I couldn’t help feeling that we all do. That having that kind of support would make us kinder, more caring people. And actually that is what Rachel discovers in her year of riding with Beth, that she had cut herself off emotionally, discounted the importance of personal relationships, friends and lovers. This is where the book veers a bit into “happily ever after” for Rachel. To her credit though, Rachel only adds that in ten years after her original book ended. And only at the urging of her publisher. This review doesn’t really do the book justice. There is a lot to think about, chew over, in terms of how we view/feel about people who are differently abled, how we view people we meet even on a casual basis. Do we support a diverse society that includes people with special needs, people who are not like us, people that might make us uncomfortable at first? Are we willing to do the work to have relationships with them? Questions that I am still chewing over myself.

I had no expectation when I started the book. An Amazon recommendation I thought I was just going to read about two sisters, a year long journey for them to connect and understand each other better. This book evolved into so much more and the people, emotions, understanding, frustrations and growth they experienced is understated. That Rachel has grown into such a fierce advocate, educator and resource is amazing. I would recommend this to everyone to have a better understanding of people with disabilities. The additional resources at the end are invaluable. Well done.

As a provider in the field of Developmental Disability I found this memoir particularly interesting. It truly depicts what we all envisioned for those DD individuals. In my capacity as a provider I was in charge of a facility which transferred individuals from institutions toward independence in the community. Since I left employ I can honestly say that Connection has lead the way in this field. This is a must read for anyone in this field and I will recommend this book to all past and present providers.

This book was suggested for our book club. I had thought it would be a nice book, it turned out to be a great book. Not only did we get to understand Beth and her disabilities, but the richness of character of our bus drivers. No wonder Beth didn't want to work, she got so much more learning about life from the different bus drivers. It just shows there are wonderful people out there in the world. we just need to slow down and pay attention to them. This book was a real eye opener. My only criticism is all the "preaching" done in the "add on" chapters. When the book ended at the original ending it was pretty close to perfect. Unfortunately the author decided we needed to be educated on all the inadequacies of our government's dealings with the handicapped. This went on for a few more chapters. I stopped before I finished the last one, I didn't want to ruin the glow I felt from the original ending.

Had to read this for school. It was a really good book, and really paints an accurate picture of life with a special needs girl (Downs syndrome). Please know that the experience of this author does not reflect others, nor does this depiction of the DS sister reflect any other DS persons. Everyone is different. This story is just one of many.

I bought this for my niece who's a Senior in High School, leaving for college soon. I wanted to send her off with a few books such as, etiquette, clothing styling, hair styling, makeup, etc. I stumbled upon this book in my search for "General Style / Clothes." Honestly, prior to now, I've despised Seventeen as a publisher, for everything they are. I used to get the Magazine as a teenager, loved it then, but now without going into a host of blah blah blah no one cares about my opinions on life blah blah blah I grew a much hated attitude towards it.However, as I do love books in general, I gave every well - rated book a chance, checked out the preview provided and was surprised at what I found. So I ordered it, knowing I could return it / sell it back / whatever, if I didn't want to give it to my niece. When it arrived and I browsed through it, I was more than happy to present it to my niece. It had basic wardrobe pieces, body size clothing suggestions, shopping suggestions, wardrobe budget mix n' matches, etc etc. I really did love it!!!

This book is great for teenagers 13 and up looking for ways to style your outfits, it gives you outfit ideas and accessories

It's a cute book with cute ideas. With the Internet at our fingertips, it probably isn't the best decision to spend money on this, but I understand some people enjoy tangible items to look through. It isn't life changing or anything, so don't expect anything you haven't seen already.

Great book really helps with the combination of clothing. I recommend it for younger people. Maybe pre teens or teens

This is a fun book with lots of great photos. I like that it is organized by style type (classic, girly, boho, etc.) so that you can zero-in on what you like. It is targeted at teenagers and women in their early twenties, but I think it is fun for anyone interested in fashion.

If you are looking to learn about fashion and style this book is a must have.

I really like this book. It's a compillation of different styles, for different people that can guide you to find your look(s). As I said before it's something that's simple but that people can try everywhere, even if you're under a budget. Also, instead of buying for example an over the top price blouse, you can find a similar piece of clothing that instead, because there always lots of places who offer the same over the top blouse for less money, or a similiar one. And it's up to you to make it work! So I definetely recommend this book, along with Lauren Conrad's books (which are about beauty and fashion, and are good too). I only wish thew book was longer!

This book is really helpful in determining what style clothing works best for you. It also helps when putting different pieces of clothes together to get a good looking outfit.

About the Author

Maury Aaseng has always been excited about drawing and art. After graduating with a BFA in graphic design from the University of Minnesota--Duluth, he moved to San Diego to begin an illustration career. His freelance work over the last eight years has spanned a variety of subject matter and styles. The range of his work has included anatomical illustration and cartoons for medical textbooks, informative illustrations for young adult nonfiction, custom watercolor work for independent authors, and logo design and creation. The variety has continued to fuel the creative spark that makes illustration work rewarding for him. In 2010, his artwork was featured in the Upstream People Gallery 7th Annual Color: Bold/Subtle Juried Online International Art Exhibition. An avid nature enthusiast, Maury moved back to Duluth in 2009, where he supplements his illustration work with wildlife photography and painting, hiking, skiing, and canoeing in the northern forests that border Canada. Maury lives with his wife, who works as a graphic designer at the university.Clay Butler is the creator of the weekly alternative political comic strip Sidewalk Bubblegum, co-founder of Claytowne Productions documentary video production company and creator of the online PC Technology humor magazine Pctyrant (an oldie but a goodie), A darn good illustrator, cartoonist, graphic designer, web designer, concert photographer and writer, Clay has been working professionally since 1984.Based out of Nottinghamshire, England, Jim Campbell is a professional comic-book letterer, one-time writer (perhaps again in the future!) and occasional artist (although his enthusiasm rather outstrips his actual ability).Dan D'Addario has been drawing as far back as he can remember. It wasn't until he was in college, that one of his art instructors encouraged him to try doing caricature drawings for a High School Graduation party. He was hooked! Since then Dan has never looked back! Dan is an illustrator and caricaturist in Macomb Township, Michigan. His career spans almost 30 years as a graphic designer in the automotive field. From 1996 until 2008, Dan drew editorial cartoons for Crain's Detroit Business Magazine. A native of the United Kingdom, cartoonist Alex Hallat has never had any art training--just a limited attention span, a love of comics, and a tendency to doodle in lectures at college. She started cartooning fulltime in 1999 and was immediately hired as the cartoonist for Brighton's daily newspaper. In 2003, Alex immigrated to New Zealand but currently lives in the leafy bayside suburb of Elwood, Melbourne in Australia. She has clients in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia and works with the American syndicate King Features, who distributes her comic strip, Arctic Circle.Joe Oesterle is an award-winning writer and illustrator, but what he often fails to mention is that many of those awards were won on a New Jersey boardwalk, shooting a water pistol into the mouth of a plastic clown in an effort to be the first to pop the balloon. He has worked as the Art Director of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle apparel division, and performed double duty as Art Director and Senior Editor at the National Lampoon. His work has appeared in television, radio, books, magazines, and web sites.Among his many impressive professional achievements Joe is especially proud of the fact that a humorous animated short he wrote, directed, and voiced has been on display at the Smithsonian Institution since 2001. I would like to thank Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster for providing me with a free – temporary – electronic ARC of this book, via Netgalley. As I am auto-approved with this publisher, it is my choice and any reviews given are obligation free.My name is Janis and I am a doodler. I feel I’ve already established that with previous books I’ve review, right? Well I’ve always wanted to be able to do cartoon drawings too and have never seemed to get it quite right… no matter how many comics and graphic novels I read, no matter how many cartoons I watch! :-DSo I really enjoyed ‘The Little Book of Cartooning & Illustration’ as it had some great step by step hints and tips that really have encouraged me to try again. I did do some cartoon faces, but as I used a very light pencil they’re not showing up that well in any photos I have taken of them. So, please sceptics of my reviews who say I can’t truly review a book I’ve not tried – I DID try this one, I just can’t show the results. Oh, and please feel free to visit when I am trying the next murder mystery I’m reading. ;-)‘The Little Book of Cartooning & Illustration’ is just that, a quick little book that gives you the step by step basics of generic cartooning. I also liked how it gave step by steps on how to turn a drawing from realistic to cartoonish… is that a word? I feel this is a great book for young and old artists wanting to try – or perfect – their cartooning skills. In the layout and formatting side of things I do have a minor quibble… but it is VERY minor. I really didn’t like the way it kept swapping from portrait to landscape and back again. I am sure, if I had been reading a paperback version of this book it wouldn’t have been as annoying… but I’d still have been frustrated. If I’m using a book to learn a skill that uses my hands I don’t like having to keep moving the position of the book to keep learning. Okay, so this may just be a fault with me, the reader, and not the actual book so relax everyone!Would I recommend this book to others?Yes I would. As said, this book would be a great little guide to get artists – both young and old – to give cartooning a go. Some who feel they can already draw fairly decent cartoons may also benefit from having a quick read through as we should never be too old or too experienced to learn something new.Would I buy this book for myself?Yes I would. If I am serious about illustrating some of my own writing with cartoon figures, I can see ‘The Little Book of Cartooning & Illustration’ being a very helpful book to have on hand… despite the layout quibble. In summary: A good “little book” to add to your collection if you’re interested in doing some cartooning.

This little book of cartooning has a lot of examples and step-by-step instructions mainly to create facial expressions and people, with the last part of the book dedicated to animals, objects and how to create 1 and 2 panel gags. It is a friendly guide without much theory and plenty of practice pages to draw on, which makes it suitable for kids.Judging by all the authors involved, I was expecting a guide with more personal techniques and tips based on their work experience, but soon enough I realized it wasn't meant to be an in-depth guide for those seriously studying cartooning. However, it is great for kids and teenagers! it has all those practice pages, enough tips to draw your first characters and even Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga's step-by-step caricatures. It has been made simple enough that you (or your kid) won't struggle or feel overwhelmed and will be eager to try these techniques out.Picture: As usual, I tried a couple of their examples. I must admit it was satisfying to complete something that looks nice, even if it's from the book examples and not from my imagination. *i read this as an eARC*

I can't draw at all, so this book was fun and educational. I sat for hours and played with this book, seeing how well I could copy and put to use what I had learned. I still need to practice, BUT, I'm on my way! Without this, I'd still be dreaming of drawing cartoon characters! Loved it!

Various pencils, papers, markers templates and digital tools were introduced by the author to get the novice sketcher up and running. It was an easy inexpensive way to start. To kick things off, illustrations were drawn that advanced in a step-by-step manner for all of the cartoons. At the end of each, worksheets were provided for practice. The sequence from rough draft to finished drawing in color was clearly demonstrated.Beginning by first drawing an oval, I enjoyed trying my hand at creating a simple face with only the most minor details. Nowhere near the level of the sample, it’s imaginable that that with some careful practice there would likely be an increase in craftsmanship. As the tutorial continued, the initial drawings were further enhanced with basic expressions. Soon, defined tell-tale emotions such as happiness or anger were cleverly drawn upon faces. Finally, adding color to the drawing brought it all to life.Creativity knows no bounds. When it comes to cartooning, the sky's the limit. Experience with an added dash of creativity will yield magnificent results. Having it all, this book is divided into four parts that complement the world of cartoonists. An invaluable resource, this is the go-to book for cartoon drawing. I would highly recommend it to any beginner or aspiring artist interested in further enhancing their ability to masterfully draw cartoons.I send my thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Walter Foster for this digital edition in exchange for an unbiased review.
