Wonderful book...I bought 2 more of the books in this series because I liked this one so much... I wanted to see what the comic book scene was like in a detailed way during the fist 5 years of my life and this book delivers... It was an incredible era for comic books and this book explains it all in detail. It was very entertaining from beginning to end.You can't go wrong with book, in my humble opinion. I look forward to reading the book that covers 1965 to 1969, the period when I actually bought my first comics...

Very good book but focus too much on Marvel and DC, I remember back in the sixties there were a whole lot of comics books around, of course Batman and Superman were very popular, and Marvel were going through his golden era, but also we had Tarzan, Blondie, Dennis the Menace, Walt Disney comics, The Lone Ranger etc., Archie Comics was huge in the sixties (To this date I still fail to find a better rivalry that Betty and Veronica in the 60's, forget about Luthor, the Joker and Dr. Doom, they come behind), I can go on long posting titles of very popular books in this age but the author of this book seems to minimize their presence in favor of of the dominance that Marvel and DC (which they also had but with a whole shared market)has had since the 80's, not rightly so back them before that,This said I still love the book, the quality is superb, very recommended.

Wow! This book totally gave me a great understanding of the comic book industry from when I was a kid. Many aspects, that I didn't understand way back when, became very clear. Enjoyable from start to finish. I look forward to reading the other chronicles.

GREAT book! I haven't yet read the others in the series but this one was epic. LOVED it beginning to end.Nice overview of all the comics and genres being published by all the houses in the early Sixties-- DC, Marvel, Charlton, etc. It made me want to go back and sample some of the era I had overlooked before. I learned SO many new things and heard lots of new angles on the creators, the story lines, the business of comic books. Well-written, nicely researched.

Dispensationalists have long described dispensationalism as a way of interpreting the Bible. Pietsch has taken this claim seriously in his explanation of the cultural and historical circumstances that led to the growth and spread of dispensational readings of the Bible. The title of the book reflects his thesis that dispensationalism is an expression of modernism. Specifically, dispensationalists pursued religious knowledge through scientific and technological methods, insisting that rigorous methods be used to build knowledge. This mindset reveals that dispensationalists participated in the larger project of modernism. The tools they used further reflected the modern world, e.g., quantification and classification, and the interpretation of time. Intellectually, then, dispensationalism reflects a quest for knowledge and a method for doing so. Pietsch also outlines how this quest played out in a context of professional development, in which religious practitioners sought to learn more about the Bible outside official institutions (at first because there were so few, and later because they were inadequate). This is Pietsch's general thesis, which commendably corrects the mistake of attributing dispensationalism to poor, angry, fearful people. The quality of this book is how the thesis is demonstrated, from the selection of events and people to the quality with which the story is told. For an academic book, Pietsch tells the story well and in an engaging manner. Important milemarkers in the story include Darby and Needham, the Bible Conference Movement, Wm. Blackstone, D.L. Moody, A.T. Pierson, Clarence Larkin, C.I. Scofield, L.S. Chafer, and various missionaries, right up to the Left Behind novels. I appreciated that Pietsch demonstrated empathy for his subject and showed discerning nuance in the story he presents. I waffled between 4 and 5 stars, wondering if Pietsch was being too kind to his subjects, but chose 5 because I really enjoyed reading this book.

Since Marsden defined fundamentalism as "militantly anti-modernist evangelicalism," many have assumed that conservative theology and modernist culture are mutually exclusive. Pietsch upends the assumption that dispensationalist means anti-modernist. He challenges any simplistic rendering of dispensationalists as anti-moderns, showing the deeply modern ways of thinking that allowed them to thrive in the culture of turn-of-the-century America. This book carefully unpacks the "taxonomic mind" and "engineering values" of early dispensationalists. Drawing on examples ranging from the Fanny Farmer cookbook, the standardization of time zones, and the "chain-references" of the the Scofield Bible, Pietsch demonstrates how taxonomic and engineering thought processes like classifying, enumerating, measuring, ordering, and charting allowed dispensational premillennialism to captivate millions of American Christians. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of conservative Protestantism in America. Along with books like Timothy Gloege's "Guaranteed Pure," Dispensational Modernism shows how young scholars of American religion are rethinking basic assumptions about the rise of fundamentalism and related conservative movements.

The book is superficial and using a false positive perspective talking from one specific elite of women with enough monetary resources to live the dream of choices, getting new jobs, traveling, having great families. What is most dangerous is the class bias, the two writers believe that everyone in this world would have enough money to do all of the things that they are doing? Alternatively, they only care for a group of women like them? Well, they were surprised that some African American women had similar themes of discussion that them! They did not include African Americans when they started the project, at the end they did, and also did a Mexican heritage group with ( I believe) the more conservative and retrograde women with Mexican ancestry. They were so proud to be good wives... I am from Argentina and came here at thirty years old, I am inserted in the Latino community of my state, and I never met a group of women that follow the stereotype of machism and marianism like the group described in the book which seems to be describing a group of women from the eighteen century. Well, in my opinion, the book is poisonous it makes me and the people I know to feel stupid and lacking creativity, on the other hand, I would not be able to do anything of the things that they do when I retire from my work not for lack of creativity, but for the lack of resources. Be real include a sample of people that reflects the population of your country; it is not true that you feel good only with people that that are exactly like you. The reality of America is its diversity, just ignoring it is not going away.

This book was a god send to me as my husband 48 yrs had just died in a foreign country and I not only had his death to handle but also to organize my move back to the USA. This book,"70Candles", gave me some direction, caused me to organize questions for my future and current life and posed questions that I had not even thought of yet. Therefore I have purchased two more books, one for my sister and one for my sister-in-law, who in a few years will reach their 70s and may be better prepared then I was to meet the future.

Perhaps I am super lucky or ahead of the curve, but as a gloriously happy 69 year old retiree there was little news here and way too much repetition of information and observations. I had hoped this would be a book I could give to friends for their 70th birthdays, but we all know this and are living good, active, reinvented lives while dealing with past, present, and looming health issues. The only new information was in the last chapter re living options and death cafes.

"not alone" reading.. good to know other women going through similar experiences and how they are coping.

I read this book when I was already at the end of my Seventies, and I wish I could have read it a few years earlier.

This book was a bit different than expected but still useful. Some of the information from respondents was inspirational, particularly those in their 80s and up.

Very disappointing. If you’ve just turned 70 or know someone who has, you know this material and could have written the book. I don’t understand the great reviews.

Just didn’t move me. It’s ok, not great.
