Only then can the dictator take his share. The cronies must pay their team, so the ruler must pay his cronies well so they can in turn pay their soldiers. As long as the ruler has the money for all this, nothing will topple him. The money can come from international aid, from income taxes on the citizens or from selling natural resources.In a liberal democracy, the ruler has much less control over the money. For one thing, most of a country's budget is fixed, civil service pensions, social security, military commitments, etc. For another, the ruler must follow the law when spending what is not already earmarked. He can't just write blank checks to whom he please.But once those differences are taken into account, power inevitably follows the same principles: all government is about paying off the ruler's coalition.Effective rulers keep their coalitions small. A city in California did this by relying on voter apathy. Hardly any one voted in municipal elections so that a few hundred voters in effect controlled the budget and paid themselves lavish salaries.To pay the coalition in poor countries, the dictator insists on handling any cash given as aid; he’ll redistribute it and if the needy are very lucky they’ll get a tiny bit of it. In rich dictatorships, the dictator sells oil or metals or any other valuable commodity and keeps the money for his cronies and himself while providing minimal health and education services to the poor, if they really have to. You ever get that feeling of realization that a fresh perspective gives you not only in how to do something but how you look at the rest of the world, past present and future? This books look at politics in general not only explains the behavior of politicians, but the behavior of human society in its natural state. By this I mean forget the alpha dog reeking of testosterone and short on brains persona, in fact other than on TV has that sort of leader ever held power for any length of time, if at all? No, instead look at the leader that puts their survival first and knows how to do it and you'll find humanities true leaders. I'm talking about the guy who talks up crowd, gets them wanting blood, then sets them loose while they stay behind the walls with their friends and the money. Or the person who controls a desired resource or commodity only they can provide that makes the supposed head of state kiss their ass. Or the woman who sets up a hidden camera in her bedroom to use as blackmail on her lover to get something overlooked. In short, this book phrases human society and the need for survival as politics to explain a politicians behavior but it really applies to everything that has a hierarchy, which really everything does. I genuinely recommend this book to be read not only buy those wishing to understand why politicians act the way they do , but who need help in understanding why their not getting what they want from their job, their relationships and their life as well as where they place in human societies hire Cathy and how to improve it.

Normally, I wouldn't pick up a nonfiction about politics besides the classics like Machiavelli, but after CGP Grey's well-explained video, my interest in this book perked up. [Dictator's Handbook] is a must for anyone interested in mechanics of politics, or just want a bigger picture of global politics explained. The book is not a literal handbook to be the next malicious dictator (great title though), but rather a keen analysis of western politics on a truly global scale. I have to say, this book isn't for the super squeamish because some of the examples used to illustrate a point can get gruesome. Actual dictators are known for enacting human suffering after all. Also, it was hard for me to finish this book, not because it talks about taxes (it does - not in a boring way), but because my mood turned quite cynical as I read the contents. When I did finish, my initial beliefs about utopian society did change and my views about democracy, dictatorship, and global politics as well.I am really glad I read Dictator's Handbook. It taught me something. It is exceptionally well written and argues with great illustrative examples.

This certainly isn't the greatest work of political theory but it is far from being without merit. The authors make a valid case for the functioning of politics in democratic and autocratic modern states with a survey of many modern revolutions, wars, and events. While they paint a stark, and cynical, picture of politics I can't help but feel that they are woefully ignorant of the vast majority of history (and I would argue, political philosophy). My point about their research of the modern period is just that; their analysis is largely limited to modern politics rather than the whole slew of history. Therefore we get such terrible over-generalizations such as democracies (including the modern USA and other Western liberal states and the Venetian Merchant Republic confusing grouped together) and autocracies (wherein Catholic Medieval Monarchies and Islamic Military Juntas are given the same consideration and breath). Unfortunately history, and the world of politics writ large, are not so easily categorized. Perhaps their analysis correct for modern states, but it fails to do justice to the myriad of states which have existed throughout history.

Having, for the past 63 years, regarded this book as a victim of prissy, uptight, Victorian-style censorship . . . I was stunned when I finally read it this summer and discovered that (in my opinion and my grown son's opinion) it is nothing but truly disgusting filth, wrapped in a cheap veneer of embarrassingly pretentious, totally sophomoric-sounding pseudo-philosophy that would quickly earn a "D" in any college philosophy class.I think porn is healthy and totally harmless, and I think we need a lot more really good porn.. But this garbage isn't porn. There's not a single erotic or sexually arousing sentence in the whole book. It just wallows in disgusting -- often nauseating -- filth, purely for the sake of filth. I mean "filth" as in dirty toilets and dung . . . NOT sex..My grown son is definitely no prude. But he put it this way: "It reads like an adolescent just using a lot of dirty words, purely for the sake of using dirty words." Most of us outgrew that childish urge at age 20. No, it should never have been censored -- not EVER!!!. If people really want to wallow in filth, they ought to be perfectly free to do so. But we can get that for free on the walls of the nearest latrine. Most of us have a lot better uses for our time.You couldn't possibly pay me enough to waste my time reading this garbage again. Ewww.

Wow! What a controversial book. I can see why it was banned and why so many opinions are polarized in the ratings. First of all, I have to warn anyone who is thinking about reading this that there is a lot of crude language and blatant description of sex. That didn't bother me. What I did have trouble with was the misogynistic attitude of the main character, who often simply refers to women using the C word and treats them as objects rather than human beings.That said, the author is writing about a misogynistic individual living in Paris during the depression and he does it with rawness and some beautifully written passages. Anyone reading this book needs to bear in mind that our culture is very different now. I think that reading this with a group who has a knowledgeable leader or using a reading guide is your best bet if you really want to get something out of it. There's a lot of meat to this book - if you can get underneath the layer of crudeness. It's a stream of consciousness piece about life and what it truly means to be happy, and the author shows us that it doesn't necessarily involve being wealthy.Who should read this: Fans of authors such as Bukowski and Hemingway.Who should not read this: Anyone who is squeamish or easily offended.

Tropic of Cancer gets all the attention, but Tropic of Capricorn may be the more important book. Written five years later, we see Miller's earlier years in Brooklyn, his total alienation and disgust with America, his early sexual exploits. If you haven't read Miller before, do not expect a novel or any cohesive structure to the book. Between short autobiographical episodes, often hilarious and explicit, he goes on long lyrical rants which amount to prose poems a la Whitman. Some are overblown philosophical/religious rants, others explorations into the nature of sex, modern man, art, America, what have you. If you are easily offended, avoid this book. If you don't want your vocabulary expanded, avoid this book. Miller's first marriage is sort of a background to the action, a marriage so loveless that he refers to his family only as "the wife" and "the kid" as he pursues other women continually. Near the end, he meets his second wife, June, not mentioning her by name, but doing a dissection of her character, as a prequel to The Rosy Cruxifixion trilogy. He also brings himself into the Dadaist and Surrealist circles, claiming he was the first American Dadaist without knowing it. Regardless of what you think of Henry and his influence on American literature, this book's worth reading. Two middle fingers up!

Reading Henry Miller is the ultimate literary contradiction. On the one hand, he is a wordsmith with very few equals. The imagination would have to stretch very little to see Miller and William F. Buckley in the salons of Paris in a much earlier time enjoying a glass of the finest wine that Europe had to offer while discussing the politics of the day. In a different time and place, Miller could easily be pictured in a sleazy bar in Manhattan sharing a draft with Larry Flynt deciding the contents of the next edition of Hustled magazine. In Tropic of Cancer, Miller is able to transform himself from Monet painting beautiful pictures with words to the lowest form of humanity crawling out of the swamps of history. This book probably should be shelved in the libraries and bookstores of the world under "Guilty Pleasures"'

I bought the book because of its notoriety and was on sale for $1.99. It is no more than the sordid rambling reminiscences of a writer in the 1920's in Paris over a period of about ten years. The book is not a novel, it has no plot it reads like a diary or journal involving decadent and degenerate people and the writer, an expat from New York. The book was published in 1934 and is apparently written in a realistic style of that period. The vulgar language was not acceptable then but it is pretty close to what is found in some current books.

Oddly arranged, and strangely strung together, but once I managed to get into the peculiar rhythm of Miller's flow, I was nothing less than enchanted. Some moments are blatantly candid and real (some might say offensive), and others are poetically raw and heart wrenching. His scope for manipulating prose has made this a truly memorable book for me, and probably one of my favourite to date.

I thought this book was going to teach you British Slangs or Words that are used in England. Nope, this is just teaching you English Vocabulary that's it nothing fancy. It was like throwing money in the trash.

I thought this book would define British English all it did was tell you the definition of fruit and farm animals I'm guessing for people who don't speak English. Glad I didn't pay anything for it. I felt the discription of the book was very misleading

I think the book is good, but it requires either a disk or online version of the language. I expected more of a text type book, complete in itself. Not what I expected.

Aced is the kind of book I needed. Interviews and the interviewing process can be painful, especially for an introvert. It is hard to put yourself out there with the potential for rejection. Gerald Ratigan shares his experiences and missteps, along with ways to improve and why you will stand out to the interviewer. He offers insightful advice from interviewing potential candidates, along with his experience of being interviewed.The level of detail included in the book, made me think of some new ideas to implement. The nine success tips were helpful, and the two closing questions will definitely be utilized. The chapter on technology and the shift to online interviews was timely and had some great tips.This is an important book for anyone job hunting, as well as, anyone looking to move up the ranks within their current job.

I decided it is time to switch jobs so I got a few "interview" books to get myself ready. Even though this is not the best book on the topic (that honor belongs to "Job Hunting Ninja" by Frank McClain) I found number of useful tips in this book. For example, what to watch out for when working with recruiters. This book spends quite a bit time on overview, how to create LinkedIn profile. 40% into the book we get into the meat of the subject of how to prepare for the first phone screen interview. The first two questions are almost guaranteed to be "Tell us about your yourself" and "Why are you looking for a job." The book helps you organize your thoughts on these topics. “ACED” helps its readers gain superior interview skills to gain unfair advantages in order to land dream jobs! Seemingly, a tall order but its author, Gerald Ratigan, pulls off this tall order. His book is set out clearly and reads well. It goes through various strategies for landing your dream job. There are moments in the book where Gerald Ratigan asks his reader, after that dream job, to stop reading and go to various websites to sign on. (Here, I’m thinking of his emphasis on LinkedIn.) He is a teacher and a good one at that. He asks his reader to look at his profile to see how a profile is done! He is ready to answer any questions. He also asks his “students” to list various important issues in their lives. For example, organisations that may be a good fit to join or groups of interest. He articulates why. It is to build up a profile, to meet people, to increase contacts and to connect. His advice is concrete and logical. He asks his student-readers to follow him by providing them with good examples that act in a similar way to excellent role-models. He articulates clearly the incredible revolution, and therein problematics, of the internet where candidates can get lost in websites, rather like spider-webs spun by the net, and where because of a clearly defined global market, potential job-seekers must pit their skills against thousands of other excellent “students”. However, Ratigan is not just a skilled interpreter of the internet, a guy with lots of relevant experience, and someone willing to share. He can also cross-reference effectively so he is able to use writers like C. S. Lewis to advantage. "Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” I would query Lewis’s use of “an extraordinary destiny” (surely “extraordinary destinies” would be more correct) but the thought is far-ranging and even takes in that ever present dirge that some drag up and out repetitively about suffering and why???!!! Well, Lewis seems to say hardships (sufferings) help! “God”, who did such a bad job, according to some, is really doing not so badly! But I stray and start to ride one of my very own hobbyhorses! Please read this book which has lots of answers to difficult questions. It is thoughtful, helpful, and well written.

ACED is very helpful for any job seeker. Whether you are looking for an entry job or a high level executive position, this book has the guidance you need. ACED covered everything from the basics to advanced interviewing skills and how to handle those tricky behavioral questions. I found the information to be extremely practical for everyday use in addition to interviewing. I'm glad I have learned how to leverage technology to set myself apart of other job applicants. Next time I prepare for an interview I will definitely use your advanced interview questions and answers. And, this weekend I'm going to be working on my negotiating skills. Next opportunity I have with the boss, I'll be asking for a raise.

I purchased this book as part of a study requested by my 3rd grader for homeschooling. We read this book together, and I'm glad we do, because I am learning right along with her. The way the book is written is really cool. It is written like a story, but yet broken into sections of the different Gods/Goddesses. It is fun to read the Egyptian Myths of creation, and also learn about each deity individually. Since this book was suggested when I was searching for Egyptian Mythology for kids, I assumed it would be written for kids to read themselves. However, the way it is written is a bit too advanced for a grade school-aged child to read on his/her own. There are some advanced concepts and language used that I often have to describe to my daughter. That aside, we both enjoy this book. It is a beautiful hard cover, with many pictures and descriptions. It is most definitely not a one-time read for us, either. We will continue to enjoy this book in future studies, as well.

I am a 7th grade language arts teacher and I could not wait for this book to arrive. I already own Napoli's Treasury of Greek Mythology, and her Egyptian storybook is equally as wonderful as the Greek one. Napoli writes with such a compelling sense of voice that readers are pulled into the stories. Egyptian mythology is complicated, especially to young readers, but Napoli is a masterful storyteller and she is able to create such beautiful, accessible stories from a complex, ancient set of stories. She has clearly done her research, as there is a really helpful section explaining information such as the origins of names, the variations of details over time and her decision process as she wrote, how the Greeks influenced the stories and names. The stories also have inset boxes with nonfiction information about details related to the stories -- funeral practices, mummification, hieroglyphs, building of pyramids, legally accepted practices at the time, desert life, etc). The illustrations are gorgeous. I would say this book is geared for middle school and above readers, but would be well suited for read-alouds with younger children. It's a must-have for anyone teaching about ancient Egyptian society and mythology. Love, love, LOVE this book!!!

This book is a great introduction to Egyptian mythology, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It includes different stories, each about a different god, that tell the story from the gods' point a view (meaning that the author "liked" what that particular god liked, and "hated" what that particular god hated in that chapter). The illustrations are beautiful, and only add to it. Unfortunately, the author added feelings and thoughts that weren't felt or thought in the original stories as the Egyptians told them, and only included stories about the most interesting or main gods; Ra and Tefnut (completely leaving out her brother Shu), Aset, Set, Usir, Nebet Hut, Heru Sa Aset, Inpu, Tehuti, Heru Wer, Hut Heru, Sekhmet, Nit, Khnum, Imhotep, Sobek, and Bastet (leaving out the other animal gods Maftet, Taweret, Hapu, and Heket). She also left out Nut and Geb, but that's fine as they never do anything (they're the sky and the earth), and Satet. And my final opinion: this is a great book that I highly recommend, and even though she left out quite a few gods, I think the ones she left out aren't completely needed. Also, the added feelings and thoughts give more life to the story, making it more engaging for older readers. I think that you'll love this book.

Simply LOVE IT! The binding, the artwork, the tales, the quality of the paper.. every detail of this book makes it wonderful! I was looking for a book like this since it's perfect for children. It makes it fun for them to read. The only thing is that some of the vocabulary is a bit advance so you will definitely need to read it to them.I bought also the Greek and Norse mythology and will definitely buy the Tales from the Arabian Night too.Click the button if this review helped you at all. :)

While I wish they used Egyptian rubrics for the artistic depictions, it does a good job of introducing Egyptian mythology without being overly graphic (for example, it doesn't say which of the pieces of Usir was missing). I love that they use the Egyptian names instead of the Greek, as well.

I used this book with a group of children ages 7-12 and they loved it. Beautifully illustrated.

Ordered this one based on the quality of the artwork. My mythology-obsessed 6th grader devoured it.

Beautiful book on the Mythology of Egypt, got it for my grandson and he loves it. The art work is captivating, the stories grab the kids attention.

Got this on my Kindle as I plan my second trip to Cuba and wish I had read it before ever having gone. The text is chock full of facts, tips and do's and font's in a "just the facts maam" sort of way. Nantes tell you what to eat, where to go, how to get there and generally de-mistifyes the whole Cuban experience with the occasional anecdote that illustrates the charm and attraction of this once forbidden adventure. There's history and plenty of color; not only Havana, but the farther and off the beaten path places: Trinidad, Cayo Jutia, Olguin and Gibara. I liked the simple explanations of the various money transactions; what to expect to pay for food, lodging and transport -- also the descriptions of the various lodging options are helpful. This book is written as a true guide book, by sections and you just have to keep referring to that which interests you next, instead of having to wade through a long-winded and general narrative. This is a book for real travelers, not a novel. What a joy!

Enjoyed the sectionalized history portions. Pictures are beautiful! You don't have to spend a lot of money to experience Cuba like a native! Best way to travel. Now can you expand your books to other areas such as China?!!

I cannot tell you how thrilled I was when having discovered this gem. Having my friends and family of Cuban heritage and not having been to Cuba before due to the restrictions that were placed long ago, I can now immerse myself in their heritage and culture through the writings in the book. What is most surprising about this book is its geographical and historical accuracy. I have seen other literature on the same subject, but nothing can compare to this book. I have recommended it already to many friends and family. Thank you for taking the time to write this book, it truly has shown the best what this culture has to offer. I look forward to my next venture to Cuba.

Wow! What an excellent book about Cuba! Best one I have read in the market. I love that the author writes about the rich culture of Cuba. It has more than 60 pictures and a detailed narration of cities, food, music, the people. I cannot wait to travel to Cuba after reading this book.Excellent job!
