I am a PhD chemist with many years as a state and Christian university professor and now several years of Christian school teaching. These are excellent books. I used them for seventh graders last year. These books are at the same level as introductory (not general) science college texts, like the ones we used at the university level for teacher training. Whether this is appropriate or not for middle school, or the logic stage in our classical school, is a matter of opinion. They stay very true to a biblical perspective, but they can be hard at times. It takes a knowledgeable teacher to help, so I wonder how well these books would work in a homeschooling environment in which the parent(s) do NOT know much about the material.

I received Earth and Science 3rd edition for free from another homeschool mom. I figured if I didn't like the curriculum then I had lost nothing. It is a bit dry and I'm using for my 8th and 10th grade sons who like it very much. They don't do pretty, flowery, appealing, colorful, over simplified curriculum of any kind. It's straight forward, cut, and dried. I like that. I'm in the homeschool world not because I want to make things easier on my kids but because I want to challenge them and this curriculum is exactly that: challenging. I've tried Apologia curriculum and hated it because it was too simple and lost their attention easily. Both boys are enjoying this program and learning what they need to learn. That's what counts.

An adult would never enjoy this book! It seems boring.BUT.... A child would "probably" enjoy this. After all, I bought it for my child who doesn't enjoy reading in hopes of this book encouraging him to read more. It's very Easy to read. Some Good ideas for kids who enjoy Minecraft. It's Minecraft! What kid doesn't like Minecraft, right?!Advance Minecraft players probably would not enjoy this book.Your kid will probably look at the black and white pictures, read the very short descriptions under each picture, get a few ideas, then get bored with the book. Would I buy another? Heck NO!I think this book could have used some enhancements, color, and a lot more effort from the author.

I feel very deceived and very ripped off by the description of this and one other book I just bought on building houses in minecraft. This is not an "Ultimate" book. In fact, the step-by-step guides are not about houses, they are about a fireplace and some other small items. All I see are pictures of several houses and no direction at all about how to build a house like the one in the picture. It took me less than 10 minutes to thumb through the whole thing and it contained "nothing" to teach me to build one of these houses. I'm very disappointed. I went looking immediately for how to get a refund. We should have at least 15 minutes to look at a book and be able to ask for a refund - If I bought a paper book, I would have not taken it out of the store.

Horrible book. Don't waste the money or the time. The instructions given are very basic and the images are grey photocopies. they don't even explain how to make most of what is talked about in the book.

Back in middle school my friends and I used to build these massive buildings in our servers. We stopped playing the game for a few years due to school and when we finally picked it back up again we realized we couldn't build anything to save our lives. I looked through amazon and found this book. It is fantastic! Even the primary builder in our group (who's studying architecture) was impressed by the information in here. We are now back to building cities of beautiful buildings, and we are doing it much faster than before.

So I have physical copies of Minecraft books, and they're just always amazing, gives me endless hours of new things to do and build. So if you've never bought a Minecraft book before, you should get this, especially since it just uploads right to your kindle. Put all those diamond tools you've collected to work for once :D

okay skip to the end (lol xD) for actual guides to make stuff, the rest of the bookis just pictures of cool furniture like the dining room or the tv. if you want an awesomehouse, well , then this book is you! I have encouraged them that this just adds to their ability to be creative. They already have a couple of Minecraft books from scholastic books, and they both prefer and recommend those.

Erik Loomis gives us a well written brief history of working women and men uniting to improve their working conditions and their personal lives against the background of a general narrative of US history at large. His main argument is that unions only succeed when they represent the interests of large numbers of workers, and also by electing political officials who will support those interests through legislation. Today unions in the private sector represent only a small fraction of working people, and even in government where about one in three workers are represented by a union, the handwriting appears to be on the wall: right to work laws and the end of automatic union dues will undermine these private sector unions as well. Hard times ahead for unions and the people they represent. So why write a book about the history of union strikes? Loomis says that "these early strikes should serve as an inspiration today, showing us that our ancestors, much like us, faced a rapidly changing world by seeking justice for their brothers and sisters." (28) My only quibble with the book is that the author doesn't mention the fact that strikes can also be fun for working people. In 1979 as a dockworker and Teamster I walked the strike picket line in Elk Grove, California. We walked for two hours in shifts, and then retired to one of our Teamster brother's RV for cold beer and baseball on the television. We won a wage and benefits increase. Nice work if you can get it!

How I wish this book had been available back in American history class. A neat set of examples demonstrating how democratic government can be either the problem, or the solution, when it comes to poverty and oppression and economic fairness.

A History of America in Ten Strikes by Erik Loomis is a study of American history told through the labor movement. Loomis is an assistant professor of history at the University of Rhode Island. He blogs at Lawyers, Guns, and Money on labor and environmental issues past and present. His work has also appeared in AlterNet, Truthout, and Salon.History is long, and memory is short. Three generations ago organized labor and collective bargaining were celebrated and credited with the growth of the middle class. Living wages and the benefit of buying American made goods drove the popularity of unions. Today unions are generally demonized and blamed for sending jobs overseas. Earlier unions were identified with early twentieth-century communism. On the Waterfront (1954) left moviegoers cheering for Brando as the dock workers banded together. Workers once united could negotiate for fair wages and benefits. Organization made workers something more than replaceable cogs in the machine.In examining strikes in their context of history Loomis demonstrates the validity of certain strikes and the rise and fall of unions in America. Two strikes that I recall are covered in the book. The Air Traffic Controllers strike and the Lordstown Strike. Growing up in Cleveland strikes were part of the regular news from local steel strikes to auto worker strikes. Somewhere in the late 1970s, organized labor began to fail. Japan and Europe recovered from WWII and union demands came to be perceived as too high as demand for American goods shrank. Today most strikes that make the news are teacher's unions and generally looked down upon even though these are the people teaching the next generation of Americans and American workers.The history of organized labor in America is an interesting struggle of workers trying to get a fair wage for their effort. Six day work weeks and 100 hours of labor was not replaced with the ten hour day until the mid-nineteenth century. By the mid 20th century Americans were working a five day work week of 8 hour days. Unions drove for benefits like medical, holidays, and paid vacations. Today America works harder and longer for less and the middle class is rapidly shrinking.Loomis gives a detailed history of the rise and fall of American labor. It's a seemingly permanent struggle to represent workers as a whole from the Wobblies to mine workers to the UAW against big business and at many times the government too. The struggle of American workers is more relevant when put into historical context than when it is captured with sound bites and demagoguery. A well-done documentation of an under-represented sector of American history.

Erik Loomis in ‘A History of America in Ten Strikes’ makes no secret of the fact that he sides with those who “throughout American history … wanted to work and live with human dignity” and who thus felt periodically obliged to withdraw their labour, as the employers’ “goal is to exploit us” and they “treat us like garbage”. “Us” is the preferred pronoun of the Associate Professor to express his profound sense of identity and solidarity with the unionised.This declared bias means that the argument of this book is not, surprisingly, lacking in subtlety. True, Loomis warns at one point that “we should not romanticize strikes” (not least because some strikes were called “to keep workplaces all white”) but this is precisely what Loomis nevertheless ends up doing.The book comprises an introduction; ten chapters focusing upon a particular strike (with roughly one-third of each chapter examining the strike in question, whilst the remaining two-thirds aim to place “that strike in context of the broader issues affecting Americans at the time”); then there is a conclusion; and finally an appendix comprising a timeline of the 150 most important moments in US labour history, ranging from the first importation of American slaves to Jamestown in 1619, to the 2016 election of President Trump (who is elsewhere characterized as “a fascist Islamophobe”). The ten strikes run from the Lowell Mill Girls Strike of 1830–40, to the Justice for Janitors action in Los Angeles in 1990.Loomis provides some interesting and accessible narrative but very little by way of incisive analysis. Even the criteria for choosing his ten strikes seem terribly vague. For example we’re told in advance that his consideration of the 1902 Anthracite Strike in Pennsylvania will explain “ the central role of government in deciding the fate of a strike, with both great possibilities and great peril for workers”. This level of platitude suffuses the entire book. Thus the chapter on the 1980 Air Traffic Controllers’ strike, for example, begins by telling us that “When government opposes unions, workers suffer.” Does anyone but the most blinkered neoliberal really need that spelt out, and even when spelt out thus baldly would any neoliberal be persuaded to mend their ways?Another problem with the book, considered as a work of History, is that Loomis is clearly as much – or more – concerned with the present and the future as he is with the past but whereas Naomi Klein in ‘No is Not Enough’ provides a rousing and plausible plan of campaign for uniting and mobilizing trade unionists, environmentalists, feminists, indigenous people and “the other victims of racism and xenophobia”, Loomis’s hope for “worker justice” in the future rests on turning the Democratic Party once again “into an instrument of workers’ rights” by unspecified “organizing both inside and outside” it.In short, whilst historically there is power in a union, ‘A History of America in Ten Strikes’ is decidedly anaemic, being as rich in vicarious indignation, as it is poor in insights about the past or detailed proposals for the future.

Disclaimer: I have been taught by the author of this book, so my perspective is skewed. That said, even if I didn't know Bryan, I so very much enjoyed the incredibly unique perspective that he coaches throughout this book. Coming away from reading this book, I recognize that even while I may not be planning on playing in the Masters, I can still find incredible enjoyment in the game at whatever level of my golf skills. Golf has been so incredibly personal for me as I grew up, and Bryan's take on appreciating those moments resonate very deeply in my life. It was a fun read and one I recommend to friends!

A great book for golfers and non-golfers alike. Bryan is an optimistic, "smell the roses" kind of guy, and this book is full of examples of how that kind of outlook can be beneficial. In talking about a golf shot where there is a lot of potential for trouble, Bryan says you shouldn't think about the possible bad outcomes, only the good because "with fear comes the lack of enjoyment". I find this to be true in and out of golf. Too often when playing golf, I (and people I play with) focus on our score, get bogged down with bad shots, and then fail to enjoy the outing. By remembering to enjoy ourselves, I'm sure our games will improve. And, in life sometimes the fear of a bad outcome will cause a reluctance to act, which can be problematic.It's a nice quick read with some funny stories you'll find yourself thinking back on.

What a great book. I loved his stories about his mom and dad. Well I really like the mom stories the most. Bryan has a way of weaving a story about golf into a story about life or visa versa. He made me laugh (a lot) and even cry a little. When all was said and done, I think I might have to try golf again this summer after taking about 30 years off (last played in my teens).I now know it is more important to enjoy those players around me than to hit a good shot. Enjoy the day, enjoy the course but most importantly the people and their personal stories.Thank you Bryan for a great read!

Interesting and heartening premise: that life satisfaction dips in one's 40s then goes back up, and that this is true across gender, income, nationality, and even primate species. However, he acknowledges that his sources are skewed toward the high achieving and professional American and is this ever true.If ambitious and fun-loving in your 20s, busy and very successful in your 30s, a bit disappointed in your 40s, but increasingly content and suddenly aware of the rest of humanity beyond 50 isn't your life trajectory, you may feel this book is a bit shallow and obvious. However, if your life has always been pretty fab and you find yourself concerned at 48 that you are sliding into a never ending funk with diminishing reason to live for the rest of your life, then hold off on the divorce/motorcycle/alcohol for at least as long as it takes to read this book.

This is without question the most important book I have ever read (and I've lost count at my age of how many books, thousands...). Written like a detective novel, but non-fiction, Rauch cleverly and powerfully combines insights from economists, psychologists and other experts to address a question that has baffled mankind for ages -- which is why so many people feel worse as they age (having nothing to do with their health, income, social status) and then more or less around 50 begin to feel more satisfied with their lives. Everyone, regardless of age, should read this book. If you're well under 50, it will warn you of potentially rocky times ahead, and if you're OK, you'll finally understand what you very likely have lived through but couldn't explain what or why you felt the way you did. This book is a masterpiece, and one you can't put down once you start. To say it's a tour de force is not to do it justice. Whatever prizes this book should win, it should win (though the author will tell you why the good feeling he will earn from this will be fleeting). There are similar lessons for the rest of us. Don't wait, buy this book, read it, and bask in the glow.

I have needed this book. I am currently in the trough of the curve, eager to be on an upward trajectory but aware that I am being changed in necessary ways. I'm grateful for the research but particularly for the encouragement Rauch offers in his candor about his own experiences.What our culture has historically called "midlife crisis" has for me been more of a slow, steady sloughing away of the habits, beliefs, and preoccupations of the first half of life as the gifts of the second half beckon to me in dreams and precious moments of insight. Having patience with the process has been challenging for me. What is wrong with me? is a frequent thought. Wise authors have helped me know the question itself is simply a sign of significant natural change. The Happiness Curve is a welcome addition to my library of midlife handbooks, sources of comfort and inspiration. Thank you, Mr. Rauch, for such a great gift!
