About the Author
Nancy Houston is a sex therapist, leadership coach, and licensed professional counselor. She is a director for the John Townsend Leadership Program in New York City and the Dallas/Fort Worth area and an adjunct professor and fellow at the Townsend Institute at Concordia University. Before returning to private practice, Nancy was on staff at Gateway Church as an associate pastor in the Marriage and Family Department and founded the Intimate Life Department. She is an author, speaker, and teacher. She has been married to the love of her life since 1974. They have four married sons and eight grandchildren who delight them to no end.

This book is truly one of a kind and certainly not your typical book on sex from a Christian perspective. What is very interesting is that the author Nancy Houston does not just throw facts or bible verses at you, she instead chooses to use modern phycology and science to back up biblical principles on sex, using both in tandem to show readers what healthy, normal sexual reactions, thoughts and dialogs look like. She also uses stories of people instead of simply stating these facts outright, which makes the book a very easy read. She lets you see how sexual dysfunction has impacted all of us and we all need help on some level. It is something I think we can all grow and learn about constantly.Through the stories she gives you a glimpse of what healthy conversations around sex, shame and guilt should look like. I must admit I was not raised talking this way. My family talked plainly about sex, but not in a healthy way. The past, shame and guilt, and regret were never really looked at and the real root issues of why we made the choices we did were never addressed or considered. This book takes you deeper into those root issues and lets readers see behind the curtain, almost like going to a therapy session while reading.It can feel a little unnatural at times while reading for sure because most of us do not talk that way, accepting people in their junk while loving them through it. That said, I believe this technique is intentional to give us all a glimpse at what healthy sexual dialog looks like and to show us how to do it ourselves. It also gives us a goal of how to communicate and sets a guide post for what we should all strive for in learning to accept and love one another through our own stuff.In the end I certainly recommend reading the book. It is insightful and thought provoking and can certainly help anyone on their own journey to sexual wholeness.
In Love and Sex, Nancy Houston skillfully combines the use of stories with sound therapeutic practices. This book is Biblically-based, therapeutically accurate and compassionately written, making it appropriate for married couples and singles. All humans have faced sexual issues at some time, or will in the future. My husband and I will recommend Nancy's book to couples we encounter through the marriage ministry at our church. I cannot speak highly enough of this author. She is singularly gifted to speak on this topic, at a time when so many are hurting sexually.
I am still processing through this and will likely read it a few times to catch more and more. I am learning more about myself and how to love my husband, both physically and emotionally. I would recommend this to any human. We all need this.
I think that this book helps people to understand themselves and others. It helps me to see and understand why people do the things that they do. Hearing people's experiences helps people to not only have compassion and understanding for others but it can help people to understand themselves and why they do the things that they do. Because I am one of what seems to be a minority today of people who have not been sexually abused, it gives me more understanding to go with the compassion I have for the abused. While most of the book was for healing of those who have been sexually abused it also had things that I could learn for our relationship too. Good book.
We all know that Love and Sex go together. What isn't talked about alot is the wounds that we bring into our sexual relationships. Nancy Houston has written a book that brings it all into the light. Not a "under a detective" light but the light of grace and hope. In her tender style she enlightens our path to discovery and freedom. Nancy is a master communicator. The author’s sensitive and biblical exposition on intimacy and sexuality is refreshing and accurate. A must read for marriage counselors and therapists and helpful for those who struggle with intimacy in marriage.
