Review

Courteous Reader: 'It is hardly necessary to state, that Franklin did not originate all the sayings of Poor Richard. He himself tells us, that they were the 'Wisdom of many ages and nations'. Any one, familiar with Bacon, Rochefoucauld, and Rabelais, as well as Others, will recognize old friends in some of these sayings, while a study of the Collection of Proverbs, made in the early part of the eighteenth century, by Ray and Palmer, will reveal the probable source from which Poor Richard pilfer'd. Yet, with but few exceptions, these maxims and aphorisms had been filter'd through Franklin's brain, and were ting'd with that mother wit, which so strongly and individually marks so much that he said and wrote. --Introduction by Paul Leicester Ford''If you want the brutal truth, I did not expect to get much useful information out of Poor Richard's Almanack. I wondered, what could Benjamin Franklin--a guy who has been, no offense, dead for more than two hundred years--possibly have to say that would be relevant to a resident of today's dot-com world? Plenty, as it turns out.'' --from the Introduction by Dave BarryCourteous Reader: 'It is hardly necessary to state, that Franklin did not originate all the sayings of Poor Richard. The Eighteenth Century was less hindered than our age by copyright restrictions. Thus much of what Benjamin Franklin, in his "Poor Richard" persona, published was in fact gleaned from earlier writers. Never mind that: these witticisms and pithy sayings are genuine Americana and well worth reading -- and owning. This inexpensive Dover edition is far from comprehensive, but what's in it is good.

So many nuggets of truth. Many of these short sayings have been passed down to is over hundreds of years, yet so many people have no idea that they were attributed to Benjamin Franklin. These are words to live by and if you haven't read Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, please do yourself a favor and read it. It's available for free.on Kindle, and is arguably the best autobiography ever written.

I had no idea how much of American culture and my upbringing came from this small book. With famous phrases like "glass houses" and "no pain, no gain" and insight like "If Jack's in love, he's no judge of Jill's Beauty" and "Historians relate, not so much what is done, as what they would have believed," I found myself highlighting way too much. I have found myself referencing and re-reading sections of the book, only a week or so after finishing it. It's worth going through thoughtfully and slowly, just like "Dark Souls."

This is the first item I've ever returned to Amazon, out of hundreds of items we've purchased here. To be clear, I'm talking about the softcover "Poor Richard's Almanack" published in "print on demand" format by General Books ([...]Apparently the contents were scanned by an optical character reader, and clearly no human bothered to look at the resulting text, as the pages are filled with typographical errors and odd layout. I'm not talking about the differences between Colonial English and modern American English, I'm talking about incorrect substitutions of "d" for "c," multiple words run together without spaces, etc. This is inexcusable. The uncredited introduction was apparently written by someone whose first language is not English, and parts of it are practically indecipherable. Not so important if you're reading for the B. Franklin content, but again, inexcusable. This "book" is only about 1/8" thick, and that includes five blank pages at the back. The type is 10 point Times, which is very small for anyone who has difficulty reading small print. Although printed with the "print on demand" process, the soft cover and interior pages are good quality. This might be worthwhile if you picked it up for $1 or $2 at a rummage sale, but otherwise you may wish to find a more usable version of "Poor Richard's Almanack."

A Great Almanack ! A Smart Man He Was > The Proverb"s and Verse"s Apply Even Today , Good Word"s of Wisdom To Contemplate in your Mind !!!!!!

This little book contains much wisdom. Benjamin Franklin was a treasure and a very impressive man. He is, indeed, remembered fondly as one of our greatest Founding Father!

There's a reason why it's such a classic. The wisdom in this book is timeless.

****** The following review is for the small hardcover version of "Benjamin Franklin Wit and Wisdom" which sells on Amazon for about $4.70, not for "Poor Richard's Almanack".******If you learn 50% of what's in this book, you'll learn 90% of what life's all about half the time. Except math. Really, EQ or IQ, B. Franklin was probably the savviest American that ever lived, and anyone can learn from this little book. Especially Congress.
